The YellowJackets from The Sing Off Season 3

by Todd Betzold

It was a night of iconic superstars on The Sing Off last night, as the groups sang a medley of three songs from current and former superstars. The night was filled with some great performances, but unfortunately someone had to go home and sadly that group was the YellowJackets. Today during a conference call, Aaron Sperber and Nick Wiggins from the YellowJackets talked about their experiences on The Sing Off.

Q: Can you talk about the experiences in Kenya changed your experience on The Sing Off?
A: Aaron: Absolutely. First of all, I don't think that there is anything that a group of guys can go through like going to Kenya and experiencing such a different culture and getting to know a different sort of people through the collaborative process of music. And so I feel like it made us a lot stronger and a lot closer unit while we were out there in L.A. And even there was a big culture shock...we're just a bunch of guys from Rochester...good friends that like to sing. And to be brought out to the Hollywood area with so many fast-paced things going on. It's a lot to take in, but I think in the stress and the competition it really helped us stay together, keep grounded and keep remembering why we're there.

Q: Do you plan on going back to Kenya at all?
A: Aaron: We do, actually. A few of us are going back because something that is important to note, one thing we want everyone to know is that the YellowJackets were honored to be part of this, but this is not the end of the YellowJackets or of what you'll be seeing of us. A good point to that is our documentary from Kenya, called "United We Sing," is going to be coming out hopefully in the summer and we will be going back to Kenya within the coming months hopefully to be working with the kids and to be getting more footage to make this documentary all that it can be.

Q: I really enjoyed your Billy Joel medley. What do you guys think you could have done better to stay in the competition?
A: Nick: You know, we went up there and said we're going to give the best performance we possibly can. I think we really did that. Remembering back to when we were in the studio the night was full of amazing, amazing performances. Unfortunately someone had to go home and last night was us.

Q: What are the most important things you learned from the judges after being on The Sing Off?
A: Aaron: I think for me it would probably be this whole thing of being a musician and a professional musician and a successful professional musician is not as hard as you might think it is when you're an aspiring young artist studying in school and having dreams of being people like Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles and Shawn Stockman, so to get to meet them, to know them and to hear them commenting on our own voices was a surreal and a very honoring experience. But to have that experience made us realize it's possible as long as we work hard for it, it is really in the cards.

Nick: I absolutely agree with that...work hard. But also each week, Shawn, Sara and Ben said that if you go out there and give a heart-felt performance than that's what they're looking for. You're going to run into a lot of talent...we did on the show and we are excited to work with the people we met in the future, but as long as we continue to keep our hearts in the right place and give performances that are heart-felt with passion and have purpose behind them like our entire run on The Sing Off. You know, being in Kenya, a lot of groups were there to win, but we were there to share that message...I think we got that across.

Q: Being on The Sing Off, what was your most rewarding part of your experience?
A: Aaron: I think the idea I mentioned before of getting to meet all these amazing people was really amazing and exciting and definitely gratifying. The most gratifying thing for us, was the opportunity for us, as 15 best friends to share a message that we feel of how music brought us together and it can bring more people together across the country and across the world. And so, as we were excited to be going to Kenya and working with these kids, the documentary spreading our message, suddenly we had 10 million viewers right there to hear our message and sign on board.

Q: What's should we expect from the YellowJackets?
A: Aaron: Besides Kenya and the documentary, what's sad is we are a collegiate group, so we graduate, but once a YJ always a YJ. We'll always be investing in the college group, but separately a couple of us do intend on touring and will hit the road and we're hopefully planning a tour some of our best friends from The Sing Off hopefully in the spring. We will be graduating in December and off to the music industry we go. With some of our best friends from The Sing Off, we will be forming a new group, so keep an eye out for us.

The Sing Off airs Mondays at 8/7c on NBC.
