Top Chef Just Desserts Season 2

By Michael J. Lamp

The chefs are grieving the loss of Carlos. Well, Chris grieved for a moment before remembering the person her cares about most: himself.

Chef Suzanne Goin joins Gail in the Top Chef kitchen. She's a savory chef, which can't be good for our cheftestants. Gail drops the bombshell news that we're headed right to the final Elimination Challenge before the finale. The chefs must create a dessert inspired by international cuisine.

Chris takes France, Orlando chooses Spain, Matthew picks Italy and Sally opts for Cuba. The twist of the challenge is that they're not creating desserts from these countries, they have to make desserts that look like an iconic food from said countries.

I know treats disguised as savory foods is a big trend right now, but our cheffies look none-to-pleased that they are now part of the trend. Matthew is the only chef that seems comfortable with the challenge. Chris, in particular, appears to be freaking out more than usual.

At service, the judges are joined by Iron Chef and guest judge Cat Cora, along with an array of other culinary notables. Matthew's disguised manicotti gets raves for its beauty, but the judges seem slightly underwhelmed by its flavor. Chris presents his beef wellington next. He gets much better marks on taste, but the judges barely mention the look of his plate.

Orlando is up next with his play on paella. He can barely keep it together in front of Cat Cora. It's hard to say how he's rating, as compared to the other chefs. The comments from the judges are sort of all over the map. Sally's closes service with her Cuban sandwich. Despite her ultra-anxiety, the judges really like her presentation.

At Judges' Table, Chris gets beat up a bit for not making his own puffed pastry. Johnny reminds Matthew that he told him there would be tomato in the dish, and apparently, there wasn't.

Johnny compliments Orlando on his subtle use of saffron, but he gets demerits for the broken rice. He gets a tad defensive, of course, but he's not as bad as he used to be. Sally's presentation gets raves, but the judges question certain flavor elements in the dish.

Sally wins the challenge, rejoices and heads to the stew room. Chris is next into the finale.

When it's down to Orlando and Matthew, Gail delivers the news that Orlando's paella has sent him home.

Only three chefs remain. Who's taking home the title?
