Project Runway Season 9

By Lindsay Strouse

Project Runway returns this week with some familiar faces back in the game, and some familiar drama right alongside it. Bert and Anthony Ryan have finally decided to put their differences behind them and begin a new, more cordial relationship. Laura and Becky, on the other hand, might be the newest pair to begin butting heads.

Before the squabbling begins, Heidi introduces the designers to their next challenge. She sends them to meet Tim at The Harlem School of the Arts where they must collaborate with one of the young art students to create a work of art. The art must then act as inspirations for an avant-garde look for the runway. Some of the designers are a bit more apprehensive about their young partners than others and are worried about what ideas might come from a 12-year-old art student (specifically Viktor).

After the initial painting session is finished, the designers are given 30 minutes to sketch an inspired avant-garde look. Olivier and Josh M. both come to a roadblock, while recently returned Josh C. easily begins his sketching.

Tim reminds the contestants that they are not to create "red-carpet" looks, it should be real, avant-garde runway fashion. While I definitely see people like Anya excelling in this challenge, I'm a little worried for our more simplistic designers like Bert and Laura.

Josh C. loads up on faux fur and Kimberly decides to work with good ol' pleather-let the games begin, ladies and gents.

Josh M. attributes the creative styling he sees from Becky to his direction he gave her during the last team challenge. Looks like somebody is suffering from a case of egotism.

Tim enters the workroom the next morning with two deliveries: the original painting and the young artists that assisted in the creation. The look on Viktor's face was priceless-he was not happy with the extra help.

During Tim's consultation with the contestants, he reminds Laura to make her puffy, peach-colored outfit more provocative and less "pretty." He then criticizes Becky's choice of creating a gown out of denim.

Tim is pleasantly surprised with the unexpected path Bert takes in his design, but doesn't think Olivier has taken his look as far as an avant-garde styling demands. He also questions how literal Josh C. was in translating his painting into fashion.

I'm really liking what I see when the models come in for their first fitting. To be perfectly honest, I've been a bit disappointed with the finished designs so far this season, but tonight is really blowing me away.

However, with only 30 minutes left in the day, Josh C. is really worried about how costumey his look is turning out to be. Because of the literal transformation from painting to fabric, the outfit carries a heavy Dracula-meets-vampire vibe.

Because of some last-minute construction issues, Olivier makes the executive decision to actually glue the top of his outfit to his model. However, before the glue dries, Tim alerts Olivier to the illegal nature of gluing fabric to the models. Let's just hope we don't see any wardrobe malfunctions a la Janet Jackson as a result.

Our designers get a little company for tonight's runway show - their young collaborative partners. Joining the judging panel are guest judges Marie Claire Senior Fashion Editor Zanna Roberts Rassi and legendary fashion designer, Kenneth Cole.

Kimberly, Viktor, Becky, Bryce, Anya are safe and have therefore made it into this season's Top 10. The remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores. It's hard to predict who scored what tonight, as it is an extremely subjective type of challenge. I have a feeling Bert, Josh C. and Olivier are in the bottom, but you never know.

The judges really liked the texture of Josh M.'s skirt and loved the contrasting colors. They all agreed Josh C.'s design exemplified trashiness and had dominatrix elements (I second that!). Bert received mixed reviews about his extremely outside-the-box design and some thought it was simply too loud to be wearable. The judges enjoyed the mixture of sharp and soft textures within Laura's design and complimented the expert construction.

Olivier guessed correctly that Heidi did not approve of his simplistic design. Kenneth Cole didn't find the design to be boring, but thought there was too much going on that didn't work in harmony. Heidi loved Anthony Ryan's interpretation of his impressionistic painting, but Kenneth Cole had some issues with the unfinished execution.

After the judges deliberate, they send Josh M., Laura, Bert and Olivier back to safety and name Anthony Ryan the winner of this week's challenge. The designer leaving the competition (for the second time) is Josh C.
