The Voice: Live Shows - Quarterfinals

by Todd Betzold

The Voice is back and we get to see the rest of the singers perform live and see who goes home (sad face).

We start out with results from last week's performances for Team Christina. After a look back at their performances and a tearful speech from Christina, Carson Daly announces that America saved Beverly McClellan (shocking to me, but loved her performance).

Now, time for Christina to save one of the remaining girls. She says some nice things about each singer, but in the end she decides to save the superstar voice of Frenchie Davis (seemed like a given to me). So, bald is in for Team Christina! They save the results for Team Blake until the end of the show.

Team Adam and Team CeeLo will be performing this week and up first are Taylor and Tori Thompson from Team CeeLo singing "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" by The Andrew Sisters. An old-school song for the duet, but while on the stage they just seemed overshadowed by the backup dancers and the high-tech stage. They came into their own as the song went on and hit some good notes...I just wasn't a big fan of the song choice for them.

The same side note as last week: the coaches all gave wonderful, loving, positive comments after each performance, so I'll save you from talking about that every time.

Up first for Team Adam is Casey Weston singing "Black Horse And A Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstall. Very upbeat song that she rocked out to. She looked very comfortable on stage while playing her guitar. There was also a lot going on on the stage, with guys drumming on pails and the backup singers dancing around, but it worked for her performance. Great vocals and a high-energy performance.

Next up, Vicci Martinez from Team CeeLo brings her war dance to the stage singing "Jolene" by Dolly Parton. She starts out in the crowd sitting on a stool and playing guitar with a slow start to the song, but hits the stage as the song picks up. Very good vocals and a heartfelt performance. She worked the stage and the audience during her performance.

The medical student Devon Barley from Team Adam gets his chance singing "Stop And Stare" by One Republic. He starts out very shy and timid, which was a concern for his coach going into the performance. He holds it in as he stands behind the mic stand, but once he takes the mic off that stand and goes to touch hands with the crowd he let loose. Ends it on a great note and very confident.

A look at Team CeeLo as they spend some quality time at the spa together, but then hit the stage for the ‘70s performance of "Everyday People." Very fun and entertaining and fun to see them all dressed up crazy, including CeeLo in his afro wig.

Hitting the stage next, we get to see Nakia from Team CeeLo singing "Sex On Fire" by Kings of Leon. With his slicked-back hair, we see him work that stage and audience like the best of them. It had a slow start, but he owned that stage. Great vocals and range and the best performance of the night, as of yet.

Jeff Jenkins, being one of the few contestants to get all four coaches to turn around during the blind auditions, gets his chance on stage for Team Adam as he sings "Jesus Take The Wheel" by Carrie Underwood. An emotional song from him, having lost his biggest fan and best friend, his mother, before this process started, the country boy gave me chills. Such a powerful performance and vocals, this guy is going to go far in this competition.

We now get to see Team Adam as they enjoy dinner at Adam's house before they take the stage as a team performing "With A Little Help From My Friends." Choir on stage and all, I must say Adam has one of the strongest teams on the show. Very touching performance by all singers.

Last up for Team CeeLo, we get to see country singer Curtis Grimes changing tempo singing rock song "Addicted To Love" by Robert Palmer. So, he took a rock song and totally made it a great country song. It just looks natural for him and no effort at all, as it comes out so easy. A great performance and fun to watch, including some sexy dancers he was dancing with on stage.

The last singer of the night is Javier Colon from Team Adam. He was one of the early frontrunners after his blind audition, so I was excited for this performance. Singing "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan, Javier gets himself behind the piano and blows the others out of the water. This guy has amazing range, vocals and stage presence. To me, if he doesn't win, America is doing something wrong.

Time for the results for Team Blake. After a look back at their performances, Carson announces that America saved Dia Frampton (another shocker to me, but also loved her performance).

Kind words for all the singers from Blake, but he chooses Xenia (biggest shocker of the night) as his save. I loved her performance last week, but I thought for sure Patrick would be moving on.

So, Frenchie Davis, Beverly McClellan, Dia Frampton and Xenia move on to the semi-finals next week...who will join them?

The Voice airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
