Project Runway Season 8

by Lindsay Strouse

After such a stressful challenge last week on Project Runway, some of the contestants feel like they're designing on thin ice. Mondo, on the other hand, couldn't feel happier after winning two challenges in a row.

For this week's challenge, the designers are greeted in the workroom with images of their baby pictures on their HP touch screens. After a few sentimental moments, the designers are told a challenge from last season is being brought back: they must create a textile design that will be put on their garment design. The garment design can be anything they choose, while the textile design must be made from sentimental value.

Many of the designers base their textile designs off of memories of their parents and families. Mondo decides to create his textile based on a very personal secret. Using his typically bright Mondo colors, his textile design is made of plus signs to represent his HIV-positive status.

The one question in my mind is whether or not the personal stories and emotion attached to the textile designs could affect the designers' focus.

Once the designers start working, Tim announces he is going to send in some special guests. Much to the designers' surprise, in walk members of their families! It's really a beautiful moment and definitely gives the contestants a much-needed break from the intensity of the competition.

Gretchen was scared her mom wasn't going to be able to make it, but is overcome with emotion when she walks through the door. The more I think about it, I think the show is making her out to be way harsher than she really is. It's always so nice seeing the contestants with the guards down.

As an added surprise, Tim announces he is extending the workday so the contestants can spend the entire day with their loved ones. Talk about a good day!

The next day, many of the designers are distracted from the visits from their loved ones. The memories of their past and different emotions involved have thrown several of them off their game.

The designers receive the fabrics they created and everyone is extremely excited to see what they can do with it. Everyone besides Andy, that is. He is still overcome with emotion and feels completely uninspired to design the dress he originally had in mind. After seeing what the designers are working on with their fabrics and giving them much needed advice, Tim gets a choked up talking about how far the designers have come.

The next morning, the designers put on their finishing touches before sending their models to the Garnier fashion salon and picking their accessories from the Piperline accessory wall.

Michael C. continues to grow on the other designers and they respect his ability to grow and learn from his mistakes and the other designers. I personally think Michael C. is adorable and could just use some TLC from his fellow contestants.

Everyone heads down to the runway where they meet guest judge Rachel Roy, an American fashion designer. Before sending anyone to safety, they talk with all the designers.

Nina is disappointed in Gretchen's outfit and thinks she could have done more. Michael Kors isn't a fan of Michael C.'s oddly constructed dress. Nina thinks Christopher's design is "fine clothes," but it isn't fashion. The judges think several of the designers opted with safe this week.

Rachel Roy doesn't find any sexiness in Andy's design-in fact, they find it rather sad. He explains how distracted he was once seeing his mom, but the judges tell him the classic showbiz quote: "The show must go on!"

The judges agreed that April's print was their favorite. The judges see a connection between Valerie's design this week and the design she made during the party-store challenge in which she made her dress out of black and white napkins.

Mondo is reticent to tell the story behind his fabric, but the judges love the design regardless. However, in a brave decision he finally tells his story to the judges and his fellow designers to which they are very grateful and supportive.

While debating, Michael Kors makes the bold, yet true, statement of: "Fashion is not for sissies." Well said, Mr. Kors, well said.

Mondo is the winner of the challenge for the third time in a row and I could not be happier for him after working through such a difficult inspiration. April, Gretchen, Michael C., Christopher and Andy join Mondo in safety. The judges vote Valerie out of the competition and she says a very emotional goodbye to the designers before leaving.
