Top Chef: Just Desserts

by Michael J. Lamp

Morgan and Seth have bonded. Morgan says they have a lot in common. He then lists their heterosexuality as the one and only example of things they have in common. He will go on to regret this association, I'm quite sure. Read on, my friends.

Elizabeth Falkner is with Gail to judge this week's Quickfire Challenge. The chefs must create a dessert that celebrates ‘penny candy.'

They have to use classic candies like atomic fireballs, sour patch kids, etc.

Seth doesn't get his dessert completed in time, and, rather than deal with it in a mature fashion, he decides to start crying and hide under his table. I wish I were kidding. When Elizabeth Falkner comes to his rescue, he explains, "The Red Hots were for my mommy."

Take a moment to really soak that one up.

Along with Seth, the bottom three is made up of Heather C., who decided not to use any actual candy (smart move), and Eric, who served up a one-dimensional interpretation of ‘penny candy.'

The top three are Heather H. for using a variety of citric flavors in her candy selection, Danielle for her fun and differing textures and Zac for making an actual cake, served with licorice sauce.

Danielle wins the challenge and earns her first immunity of the season.

The chefs head to The Tar Pit, Mark Peel's new restaurant, to kick-off their Elimination Challenge, which is to create a dessert based on a cocktail.

While the chefs are selecting ingredients from behind the bar, Seth has another mini nervous breakdown, lashing out at pretty much everyone. I realize this guy is dealing with his mother's health issues - and that's definitely sad - but dude's got to chill out. He's the epitome of a loose cannon. Eventually, the chefs confront him about being such a crazy pain in the ass. He conjures up some remorse and promises to try and make it right. We shall see.

While cooking at The Tar Pit, many of the chefs struggle with timing their dishes, which leads to some plating issues and lots of nerves in the kitchen. Oh, and while Seth is running around like the Tasmanian Devil, some of Zac's chocolate pieces come crashing to the ground right next to him. It wasn't Seth's fault, though. Just ask him, he'll tell you.

As if I haven't written about this schmuck enough, right before Judges' Table, Seth tells the other cheftestants to ‘suck it.' I think I want him kicked off just so he is forced to deal with the heaping pile of crazy that makes up his personality.

The favorites this week are Erica's margarita cake with tequila sauce, Eric's pineapple upside down cake with bourbon and Igit's Campari/panna cotta/ice cream concoction. Erica is named the big winner, and she seems truly excited to have won, which adds some refreshing cuteness to an episode dominated by temper tantrums.

It's no surprise to find Seth in the bottom three for his blueberry cake. Tim and Malika join him; Tim for his basil and rum cocktail and Malika for her oversized portions of Mojito cake.

Tim is sent home, which upsets not only me, but all the cheftestants, as well. He had become somewhat of a den mother to the other chefs, and you could read the disappointment on all their faces when he told them he'd been given the boot.

Before we part, a word to you, Seth. You better lock it up, man. Like, now.
