Hell's Kitchen Season 8

by Joshua Krol

Tonight, on the season 8 premiere of Hell's Kitchen, Chef Gordon Ramsay has increased the stakes as the winner will be the new head chef of a promising Los Angeles restaurant and hired spokesperson for Rosemount. That is, if they can get passed Gordy's demoralizing demeanor and cook to impress.

Anxious to get started, the chefs arrive with smiles as they attempt to enter Hell's Kitchen. However, to their surprise, the door is locked and they are greeted by James who then blindfolds the chefs and transports them to the exquisite LA Market. There the chefs learn about the grand prize and are informed of the quarter of a million dollar salary. Needless to say the chef's smiles returned.

This season the men vs. women, blue vs. red trend continues. Returning to Hell's Kitchen, the chefs sprint into action in an attempt to create their own signature dishes for Chef Ramsay.

Chicago-based chef Emily creates a pleasing duck breast which Ramsay is delighted with despite her own chest having to be covered up with a towel by Gordy. Russell, Julian, Boris, and Sabrina also manage to impress Chef Ramsay. But, of course, not all is well in Hell. Nona's honey sweetened fried chicken is the first to be spit back up into the garbage and Antonia's mud-like soup makes Ramsay physically ill.

This was too much for the women to overcome as the tie-breaker went to the men. You're not supposed to make Gordy throw up on your first dish Antonia! The winners get wined and dined as the losers spent just over five hours cleaning the kitchen, complaining the whole time.

The following night, Ramsay put the chefs into the fire for the grand opening of Hell's Kitchen. This seemed to be too much for Antonia as she literally passed out and had to be rushed to the hospital. You know what they say: if you can't deal with the heat then stay out of the kitchen. But the show must go on as the chefs prepare one of the worst meal services ever. After two hours of waiting, guests left hungry and Ramsay was left disappointed to say the least.

This new low opted for a disappointing draw as the teams were sent to deliberate on who should be the first to go. After hearing surprising news that Antonia's will not be returning to Hell's Kitchen the women then lose veteran cougar, Lisa, for lack of fish cooking abilities.

The second part of the two hour season premiere starts with a bang, literally. The chefs are woken up by Asian drummers at five in the morning and are asked to meet Ramsay in the kitchen. There the contestants are introduced to sushi master, Chef Masaharu Morimoto. Morimoto shows them how to roll the perfect piece of sushi which the contestants must recreate. The girls roll out an impressive fifteen while the guys manage to come from behind and win the sushi challenge.

In reaction to the poor service presented at the grand opening, Chef Ramsay decides to choose Vinny and Jullian to be assistant Maitre D's. As Vinny's waiter skills stumble, the women start pumping out dishes. In an attempt to speed up the service, Vinny tells the customers not to order sides. Big no no Vinny! Two hours of crappy service and even crappier cooking Ramsay literally boots out the entire blue team. Despite having minor setbacks, the red team completes the dinner service resulting in blue team member elimination.

The deliberation sent Boris and Raj to face elimination but Ramsay also called down Vinny for his side dish stunt. After pleading their cases, Gordy has seen enough. In a surprise move, Chef Ramsay actually calls out Curtis for his lack of skill and sends him packing.
