The Biggest Loser 10

by David McAlpine

Last night, Jillian, Bob and a brand new cast of contestants returned for the 10th season of NBC's hit reality show The Biggest Loser. Even though this show has been on the air for more than five years, they try to make the point that obesity is growing out of control--almost two out of every three Americans are considered medically obese.

The common thread with the potential contestants (who came out in droves to try out for the show): they all had an excuse. Don't get me wrong here, I love this show, but I think the Second Chances season was enough excuses for me, I wanted someone to stand up and say that they just don't like exercise (I could certainly relate). But the stories kept coming, and they were worse and worse, milking any and all empathy out of me. Seriously, this show is draining now.

Still, I love watching people who are really down and out start fighting back and make a change for the better in their own lives. This week wasn't so much about the actual competition as it was about selecting the cast and this season's theme: "Pay it Forward." This week's inspirational moment came in helping entire communities trying to better their own health.

And what better way to help a community than to rally them around three would-be contestants on this season of The Biggest Loser? Jillian, Bob and Alison traveled to Los Angeles, Detroit, Oklahoma City, Boston, Atlanta, Phoenix and Portland in search for the 21 lucky people that would get a chance to come to the ranch--three in each city.

Chance, however, was the operative word, as the group of three contestants in each city had to battle it out in competitions like the mile run or the 500-step challenge and only the first two made it onto the show. With stories of death, cancer, alcoholism and abuse abound, you really can't help but want all of them to be on the show. However, after 7 different competitions, the cast of the 10th season is:

Black Team:
Brendan, special education teacher, 32, Boston, MA
Alfredo, futures commodities trader, 43, Staten Island, NY

Blue Team:
Ada, company project coordinator, 27, San Jose, CA
Adam, nonprofit manager, 26, Santa Ana, CA

Green Team:
Patrick, sales representative, 28, Vicksburg, MS
Rick, pediatric physical therapist, 54, Conwary, AR

Orange Team:

Sophia, high school counselor, 28, Germantown, MD
Jesse, law clerk, 28, St. Paul, MN

Pink Team:
Allie, student, 22, Moore, OK
Lisa, sales representative, 31, Norman, OK

Purple Team:
Burgandy, stay-at-home mom, 35, Eagle Mountain, UT
Tina, retired homemaker, 58, Boring, OR

Red Team:
Jessica, bridal consultant, 27, Tucson, AZ
Mark, bartender, 31, East Brunswick, NJ

Now, those loyal fans of the show may recognize that the Yellow Team is curiously missing from the bunch. Well, twist number 2 proved the show's way of "paying it forward": some of the eliminated contestants will have a second chance to return to the ranch later on in the season.

Tune in to next week's episode of The Biggest Loser to see what happens when the 14 finalists are ready to hit the gym with Jillian and Bob--only on NBC, Tuesday at 8/7c!
