Survivor: Nicaragua

by Gina Scarpa

The wait is finally over, Survivor fans! The show has returned for season 21, set in Nicaragua, where players will be divided up by age to see if it really is a factor in being successful in the game. The players have been in the game just 30 seconds before Jeff Probst reveals that there is a Medallion of Power hidden in a nearby lagoon and it's their job to find it and bring it back to him. Brenda gets to it first, fearlessly climbing a tree to get to it and returns to Jeff.

These players already think that they're split into two tribes but Jeff drops a bomb and splits them by age 40 and older (Espada) vs. 30 and younger (La Flor). I immediately want to know Yve's secret - she looks awesome for 41! Brenda is given the choice to keep the Medallion for her tribe or trade it for fire and fishing gear. I was convinced the young egos would choose power but they smartly chose a quick start at camp.

At their respective camps, Jimmy and Kelly B. stand out to their tribes as immediate threats - Jimmy for his superstar status and Kelly B. for being an amputee. Quick alliances form between Chase and Brenda at La Flor and Holly and Wendy at Espada. On a side note, I'm still trying to figure out if Wendy and Jud are for real...

Hidden immunity idols have returned to the game but there hopefully won't be 50 floating around for the Russells of the world to find. The clues are tough and players are going to have to work for it. Alina and Kelly B. find their clue and decide to work together, more by force than choice.

Over at Espada, Jimmy Johnson gives his tribe a pep talk before they head into their first immunity challenge. How cool is that?

La Flor arrives at the challenge with a lot of bravado which is pretty obnoxious. For this challenge, one player from each tribe stands on top of a tower and pours water down gutters that players must guide into a bucket. Once the bucket is full, puzzle pieces will drop and... as Survivor fans know, it always comes down to the puzzle.

The two tribes release their puzzle pieces within seconds of one another but the four younger woman for La FLor are able to finish theirs first. Back at the Espada tribe, it looks like the debate is between Jimmy J. and Wendy to be the first player sent packing.  Nobody wants to say exactly who they want to vote out because they don't want a target on their back or stand out as having a different opinion than the majority.

At tribal council, Jane receives lots of props for starting fire quickly at camp with just her glasses.  Jimmy J. admits being a big target but swears he's not here for the money, but more for the experience, but some people aren't buying it.  Wendy reveals she's 48 and WOW!  She doesn't look it at all!  She also talks way, way, WAY too much and probably just sealed her own fate.  I'm pretty sure, in 21 seasons, I've never seen someone shoot themselves in the foot so badly.

When the votes are read, the majority sends Wendy and her mouth right out of this game.  What can I say?  Silence is golden.
