Project Runway 8

by David McAlpine

Last time on Project Runway, the 16 remaining designers moved into the New York City house and the competition started to ratchet up fast. Each contestant had do design what they thought a "Marie Claire" woman looked like, which Gretchen won for the second week in a row. Jason and Nicholas' designs, however, didn't make the cut, causing the judges to eliminate them from the competition.

Last night, it was a cause for celebration on the show, because each contestant had to create an outfit from things they found in a party store. Even better, the guest judge this week was Betsey Johnson, since her dresses are really vamped up versions of things you would find in kindergarten.

After the challenge started, powerhouse Gretchen began to emerge as the resident bitch of the show. Now that she's won two competitions, her mild criticisms of everyone have become a lot more harsh, and it's getting on everyone's nerves. She really has no backup, and it seems like she could fade fast if she doesn't start creating a little bit of support in the house.

For their project, Tim takes the designers to "Party Glitters," a giant party warehouse bonanza in Brooklyn. For the sake of the models and themselves, Tim suggests not using tablecloths or anything too much like fabric (you know, like any other piece of clothing would be made out of), but says that they can use muslin under the materials. The only one who can't seem to follow those directions is Casanova, who chooses a tablecloth to work with, anyway. Oh, and some stuffed dogs.

Gretchen starts to complain again about everyone else's issues, specifically how Andy has no time management. Apparently his inability to do things in a short amount of time is hard on her and she doesn't like it (Insert pouty face and tantrum here)! Casanova is beating the crap out of his stuffed dogs and Kristin doesn't know if she wants to use her "animal wooly balls" or her "real balls."

Tim pays a visit with everyone furiously partying it up (on their designs). Valerie was trying to do a teal belt out of balloons, but Tim suggested getting rid of it. He also somewhat scolds Andy and Ivy for not managing their time effectively (while boosting Gretchen's ego because she was right). The best moment: when he gets to Kristin's table and starts fondling (no joke) her wooly balls, laughing hysterically. So, folks, the decision is in: Tim loves his wooly balls.

But before the night is over, the models have a twist: the designers have to make a last-minute accessory out of more supplies. As creative as that twist could have been, most designers choose to make something very small so they would complete the challenge.

It's the day of the runway walk and Andy and Ivy (our two resident last-minute designers) are down to the wire, completely frantic. April and Peach help out Andy (I'm sure much to Gretchen's liking), while Ivy is apparently shaking and lightheaded.

No more time for worrying, though, because it's judgment time! Betsey Johnson was looking…interesting…in her own version of a party dress, and the creations that the contestants made were just as wild.

Sarah's dress, which was basically a palm tree cut out onto a dress, stuck out as incredibly plain compared to Casanova's monstrosity of a dress, which somehow combined fluff and flamenco and a funeral vibe? Andy's dress looked almost like an off-the-rack Betsey Johnson dress, centered around a really cute black ribbon. Valerie also had the same kind of look going on with a black-and-white napkin dress, but it didn't quite stand out as much as the others. She really put it best: she's the Susan Lucci of Project Runway. Womp womb.

Other dresses of note: Christopher's dress was mostly made out of beige party napkins which gave it a very nude look, and not much else. Ivy's dress, a garden party dress (kind of?) had a really strong concept, but it was way too big. When her model was silhouetted, she kind of looked pregnant. Finally, our wooly balls expert Kristin came out with a hot mess of jumble on her dress, but it seems like it was creative enough to streak by this week.

Finally the results are in: Gretchen, Valerie and Andy are the top three. Much to Gretchen's dismay, she's not the winner this week, but instead Andy is, continuing Valerie's slew of "almost the best"s. Meanwhile, AJ (whose dress was more of a collage than anything else, with a crotch fringe), Casanova and Sarah were in the bottom three. After some harsh words from the judges and some great shots of Casanova looking very confused, Sarah was sent home.
