Here we are arriving to the second episode of Real Housewives of Washington DC. Admittedly, it takes a little while to get to know personalities, so the first few episodes are just tone setters, but things are beginning to unfold as to why there are certain friendships and frenemies already. We still haven’t really seen much of Washington DC, and it seems like the suburbs might be where it’s at in this arm of the franchise.  So, we have met all the ladies and now we get to see how they all get along with each other and what their struggles are.

First of all, its Michaele’s birthday in the first scene (I still have NO idea how to say her name…) and her husband has her pick out a bag or shoes or something from a personal shopper and then gives her a horse that she names Sparkle. We are seeing that the Salahi’s do care a lot for each other, but they definitely have that nouveau riche feel in the show, with everything sort of flashy and gauche.

Later, they host Cat and Mary to their home to take a polo lesson on some of their horses, and Michaele tells the girls to come jeans-casual while she shows up in jodhpurs to ride Sparkle. Oh, and she doesn’t know how to ride a horse. So she looks like a poser. When, after the riding lessons, they serve the ladies beer in wine glasses on a vineyard, they look even more like posers...

On the way to ride the horses, Mary tells Cat that the reason she knows Michaele is because Michaele used to work at the Trish McEvoy counter and do her makeup. So, Michaele is certainly new to this world, and no one is forgetting that. Mary, on the other hand, seems to be portraying herself as someone that comes from old money. Of course, no one knows if this is true or not, but no one is disputing it either.

Her daughter Lolly has moved back home, which is a source of contention since she also has a Burmese Mountain Dog (ick! Drool central!) that is shedding and s#&tting all over the house to her dismay! Ditch the dog Lolly! I suppose Mary could have put her foot down about this, but according to Cat earlier, when they go to eat at the restaurant Lolly works at, Mary is a “pushover”. Honestly, I don’t see the “pushover” in Mary? I mean, it looks like Lolly is working as a waitress and trying which is more than any rich kids I know do. Maybe it’s different in LA than DC? Either way, Cat is a tad bit rude when Lolly comes to the table to talk to the women while she is weeded and working. Cat has that kind of double edged sense of humor that is really mean spirited.

You see this a lot when Stacie decides that she is going to invite the women to Sunday brunch at her Aunt Frances’s house. Aunt Frances took on the motherly role when Stacie lost her mother, and every Sunday they go to her place for some good old southern soul food. I wish I was invited.

Cat arrives first and is a little uncomfortable to be there. When she is served a glass of wine that is spoiled she points it out, which really rubs Stacie the wrong way. Lynda and Ebong show up, as do Mary and Rich. Lynda is excited because she is a good old southern girl and loves the food.Jason, Stacie’s husband has a conversation with Rich and Ebong about his invention, a penile volumetric measuring device, which makes Rich and Ebong quite uncomfortable. It is fun to watch, poor guys! When Paul Wharton, and Jason start talking about how good collard greens are with Cat sitting between them, she starts to act very uncomfortable. She gets up right after dinner and leaves, passing up a good looking peach cobbler that is served after she leaves. She later admits that she felt out of place, but we will get more detail hopefully as the season progresses.

Meanwhile Michaele is throwing a party for Paul Wharton (DC’s version of Dwight, Richie, Danny or Simon depending on which other franchise you pick…you know, the token ensemble guy). There seems to be some competition here, since Lynda (apparently Michaele’s nemesis) threw him his 30th birthday. She makes a point of telling the planners that she wants an unlimited amount of guests since Lynda limited her party to 25.

All that is fine and dandy until Paul is getting ready and Michaele is nowhere to be seen. Oddly, she doesn’t show until most of the guests arrive and then comes with a police escort in a white stretch limo. I am surprised she wasn’t wearing a wrist corsage, to be honest…Either way, Paul easily lets it slide that the hostess was absentee to her own soiree, but later when she and husband Tareq come up to do the toast, everyone sort of just rolls their eyes.

According to Lynda, DC doesn’t buy "flashy" like Vegas or LA, and big toasts in addition to white limos don’t gel well. At the party, Michaele does confront Lynda about her starvation…oh I mean, weight issue, but Lynda won’t back down, and sort of gives Michaele a back handed apology saying that she is allowed to talk to Paul, that she thought Michaele should eat a burger and fries, and  "if" Michaele was offended by that, well then sorry.  The Salahi’s are to Real Housewives of DC what The Pratt’s were to The Hills, so if they are persona-non-grata now, one shudders to think what the upcoming White House Party Crasher debacle will do to their non-welcome reputation…
