So You Think You Can Dance Season 7

by Danae Young

This week on So You Think You Can Dance, the contestants perform on the 150th show in So You Think You Can Dance history! The judges were joined by Kenny Ortega, one of the masterminds behind Michael Jackson’s “This Is It.” Unfortunately, there is ANOTHER injury this week and it is Billy. This means Billy will be placed in the bottom three for Thursday night.

Each contestant danced a total of three times throughout the show tonight; once with an all-star, once solo, and once with another contestant.

Dancers: Lauren and Twitch
Style: Hip Hop
Choreographer: Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo
Song: “My Chick Bad” by Ludacris and Nicki Minaj
The dance was a Wild West version of Hip Hop. Lauren is the last girl standing in the competition so she really needed to prove herself this week, which she definitely did in this routine. Lauren had an amazing performance and she stayed in character the entire time. She came out hard and strong while somehow managing to remain sexy.

Dancers: Jose and Allison
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh
Song: “Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind Theme” by Jon Brion
The story of the dance was about a couple who is in love, but it doesn’t work out. Jose did a great job of holding character. There was not a lot of actual “dancing” on stage because there were sitting on the edge of the stage the whole time. Regardless, the story was well performed and Jose did an outstanding job in helping tell the story with Allison.

Dancers: Robert and Lauren
Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Tyce Diorio
Song: “Wasted Time” by My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult
The two dancers had to basically seduce each other throughout the entire dance. Robert didn’t find this very difficult seeing as how he thinks Lauren is super hot. The performance wasn’t as X-rated as I had imagined, but it was still very enjoyable. Robert totally killed it up there on stage and he is a very solid dancer.

Dancer: Adechike
Song: “This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell

Dancers: Kent and Kathryn
Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh
Song: “Tightrope” by Janelle Monae
Sonya wanted Kent to understand how great of a dancer he is while doing this performance. The dance was nonstop fun. It was very cute and there was so much they did in the performance between lifts and hand springs and everything else in between.

Dancer: Robert
Song: “Parachutes” by Trevor Hall

Dancer: Lauren
Song: “The Waves” by Elisa

Dancers: Adechike and Comfort
Style: Hip Hop
Choreographer: Tabitha and Napoleon Dumo
Song: “Fallin’” by Alicia Keys
Once again this was a dance about love, which is a new storyline for a Hip Hop routine. It was a very intense dance to the point that it almost looked like a movie or some sort of dance film, if that even exists. The story was danced so well between the two of them. It was incredibly real and touching.

Dancer: Jose
Song: “Give It Up or Turnit A Loose” by James Brown

Dancer: Kent
Song: “End of the Road (A Cappella)” by Boyz II Men

Dancers: Robert and Lauren
Style: Samba
Choreographer: Dmitry Chaplin
Song: “Drummer Boy (SYTYCD Remix)” by Debi Nova
Robert had very clean lines and the connection between the two of them was great. They danced very well together and as individuals. They both kept up great rhythm at a very quick-moving pace.

Dancers: Adechike and Jose
Style: Paso Doble
Choreographer: Dmitry Chaplin
Song: “The Arrival/Rampage/Continued Existence” by James Dooley
Throughout the dance, the two of them held character in fighting for victory. This was a very strong, manly performance. It was kind of funny to see how well they get along in real life and then to watch them almost look like they hate each other while they were dancing. That just proves their commitment to the routine.

Dancers: Kent and Twitch
Style: Stepping
Choreographer: Chuck Maldonado
Song: “Pro Nails (Rusko Remix)” by Kid Sister
This is the first time Stepping has ever been a routine on the show. It involves an incredible amount of coordination. Kent did a great job and showed an entirely different side of his dancing self.
