So You Think You Can Dance Season 7

by Danae Young

This week on So You Think You Can Dance, the nine remaining dancers work on inspiring America by using their own personal inspirations as their guidance.

Dancers: Lauren and Neil
Style: Broadway
Choreographer: Joey Dowling
Song: “Let Me Entertain You” by Debbie Gibson
Lauren’s student council advisor is hard-working, which really inspires her. The performance is about a paper boy reading the newspaper who sees a 1940s actress and day dreams about her. They can be very overdramatic in their dancing and they were - in a very good way, of course.

Dancers: Melinda and Pasha
Style: Salsa
Choreographer: Fabian Sanchez
Song: “Magdalena, Mi Amor (Quimbara)” by D.L.G.
Dr. Harold Cromer has passed knowledge from tap dance to life to Melinda. He has, by far, been her biggest inspiration in the dance world. Melinda’s performance tonight was very sexy and playful. America got to see a new side of her. However, she appeared to be missing some fluidity in her dance.

Dancers: Billy and Kathryn
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Stacey Tookey
Song: “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri
Legacy from Season 6 is Billy’s biggest dance inspiration. Billy’s routine tonight was about Billy breaking Kathryn’s heart. By the time Kathryn puts the pieces of her heart back together, Billy comes running back. Billy and Kathryn are very silly people and have trouble keeping a serious face on for the routine. But, they pulled it together for the dance.

Dancers: Ashley and Ade
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Dee Caspary
Song: “Cosmic Love” by Florence + The Machine
Ashley’s dance teacher is her biggest inspirations. She enjoys the positive energy she gets from her teacher. The dance tonight was all about teamwork and allowing two to become one. Ashley had a smoothness about her throughout her performance.

Dancers: Robert and Courtney
Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh
Song: “XXXO” by M.I.A.
Robert has been inspired most by his mother for being through so much and still supporting him today. Between miscarriages and cancer she has seen it all. Robert’s performance was incredibly powerful and dynamic.

Dancers: Jose and Anya
Style: Samba
Choreographer: Dmitry Chaplin
Song: “Long Time” by Shakira
Bruce Lee’s philosophy on life and Jose’s love for Kung Fu as a kid have really taken a huge role in how he lives his life today. This dance tonight was filled with trust between Jose and Anya. The man inside Jose really came out to play in this routine.

Dancers: Kent and Allison
Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Mandy Moore
Song: “Heartburn” by Alicia Keys
Kent’s older brother was the captain of his soccer team and Kent has always looked up to him and been inspired by him. Tonight, Kent’s dance required strong chemistry between the two dancers and Kent learning how to not only act like a man, but be one!

Dancers: Adechike and Lauren
Style: Hip Hop
Choreographer: Dave Scott
Song: “Hot-N-Fun” by N.E.R.D feat. Nelly Furtado
Adechike grew up in Brooklyn with no one to look up to but Desmond Richardson. It turns out Adechike has a bit of a crush on Lauren, which allowed for some great chemistry between them, especially when the clothes slowly came off throughout the routine. The dance really brought out Adechike’s personality.

Dancers: Alex and Twitch
Style: Hip Hop
Choreographers: Tabitha and Napoleon Dumo
Song: “Outta Your Mind” by Lil Jon and LM*AO
The most masculine ballet dancer in the world, Edward Villella, has helped inspire Alex and help him understand that anyone can do ballet. Alex was very out of his element this week, not only doing Hip Hop, but also dancing with another guy.

On top of each couple dance, each dancer also performed a solo routine in their specific style.

Dancer: Billy
Song: “Something Bigger, Something Better” by Amanda Blank

Dancer: Jose
Song: “Super Bad” by James Brown

Dancer: Kent
Song: “Down (Candlelight Remix)” by Jay Sean

Dancer: Alex
Song: “Rule the Planet” by Planet of the Apes (soundtrack)

Dancer: Ashley
Song: “Royal T” by Crookers feat. Roisin Murphy

Dancer: Robert
Song: “Holy You in My Arms” by Ray Lamontagne

Dancer: Melinda
Song: “Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down” by Alicia Keys

Dancer: Adechike
Song: “Ruthless Gravity” by Craig Armstrong

Dancer: Lauren
Song: “Unchained Melody” by Cyndi Lauper
