Top Chef Masters Season 2

by Chandra Clewley

This weeks Top Chef Masters Season 2 starts out right out the gate with a Quick Fire challenge to create a dish using leg proteins. Rick, Tony, Susur, Jonathan, Marcus and Susan are left in the competition. Rick is excited and likes using legs. The guest diner is Jason Lezak, Olympic Gold Medalist and the critic will be Jay Rayner. It seems like he was used in the Quick Fire’s more often this season.

Rick goes for octopus but is worried about time and the chewiness Susur feels competitive, Jonathan cooks for Jason, a swimmer who needs to carb up before the race, Marcus is watching Rick, who he thinks is his biggest competition now and Susan is concentrating on getting her chicken skin crisp.

Tony presents Warm Crab and Potato Salad with Three Types of Coriander. Jay thinks it is “underdressed” but Jason likes it.

Susur serves Indochine Roasted Leg of Lamb with Lamb Meatballs, Pine Nuts and Dry Cherry Sauce. Jason likes the flavor, while Jay says it is cute.

Jonathan dishes up Capellini with King Crab Leg, Jalapenos, and Mint. Jay says it needed more crab and Jason says it’s a great meal for an athlete.

Marcus serves Confit of Frog Legs with Curry Broth and Crab Rice. Jason thinks it is a little too rich for him, but Jay likes the big, bold and complicated flavors.

Rick serves Egg in A Hole with Roasted Octopus Leg and Béarnaise Sauce. Jay thinks the octopus is unforgiving, and Rick says it is “toothsome”.

Lastly, Susan’s dish is Cumin-Cilantro Chicken with Pickled Tomatoes on Quinoa and Raisin Pilaf. Jason says it is quite tasty and Jay is in love with its crisp coating.

Susan takes the win on the Quick Fire Challenge and gets an advantage in the Elimination Challenge.

For the Elimination Challenge, the chefs will throw a Tailgate Party at a USC Football Game using a Weber Grill.

Jonathan loves the challenge and has good experience. Marcus and Rick are picking the same protein. Tony is thinking pizza, Susan likes tacos. Jonathan gets a rib eye and seems to be thinking tacos too. Susur has never been to a game and doesn’t even know what tailgating is, and Tony is annoyed with Susur’s comments equating him with the Sopranos. He finds it a stereotype.

On the way to the game, Susur says to Marcus, “There are other chefs here today?” To which Marcus replies, “Those aren’t chefs, those are tailgaters.” Susur, as if the light bulb goes on in his head, says, “Oh! You get fed before the game!”

Susan’s advantage is a USC jersey.

Jonathan’s dish is New York Steak Tacos with Grilled Vegetables and Bordelaise Sauce. An issue with the judges and the size of the steak slices leads Jonathan to defend himself and Gael Greene to take his back.

Rick has a Chermoula Grilled Chicken with Baba Ghanoush; Spicy Slaw on Pita Bread which the judges say was great except the food kept slipping off the pita.

Marcus serves Grilled Chicken and Shrimp Soup with Grilled Vegetable and Couscous and a Burger, but Jay thinks the burger was a bit dry. James disagrees and loves the burger.

Susur presents a Korean Style Skirt Steak wit roasted Cauliflower and Austrian Dumplings. The critics aren’t sure why the dumplings were there.

Tony’s Grilled Pizza with Mozzarella, Tomatoes, Romano, Arugula and Prosciutto seems like a crowd favorite, but James doesn’t like the over cooked crust.

Susan has Skirt Steak Tacos, Black Bean and Corn Salsa and Roasted Pepper Salsas that the Southern California football fans love, and has a kick to it that the critics love.

In the end, Susan takes the win.

Jonathan, Rick and Tony are called to the chopping block and in the end Tony’s pizza is eliminated.
