American Idol Season 9

by Gina Scarpa

I was a skeptic, like everyone else, when I heard that Adam Lambert was going to be this week's mentor to the Top 9 on American Idol. Surprisingly, though, he was actually the most helpful and interesting mentor all season. I think they should consider bringing him on full time - sort of like the Tim Gunn of American Idol. He had no problem telling people that they were boring and needed to step up their game. Finally, someone tells the contestants what they needed to hear and, for the most part, it paid off for them. Here's how the performances went down:

Crystal Bowersox - "Saved"
What can you say about Crystal that hasn't already been said? Yes, she's the most comfortable artist in the competition, one who clearly knows who she is. She rocked "Saved" last night and I loved the blues/gospel feel to it. To me, she still needs to be a current artist because I don't see it. If she were smart, she'd sing a song that came out in the last two or three years the first opportunity she gets.

Andrew Garcia - "Hound Dog"
This guy is killing me softly with his songs. I want so much to like him and get on board with him but I just can't. I feel like nine times out of ten, he's not listening to the judges. They have definitely sent him mixed messages but the part about not being boring is pretty straightforward. What a bizarre performance with a 1940s era microphone that served only as a prop. Yeah, we see your body mic, buddy.

Tim Urban - "I Can't Help Falling In Love"
I can't believe I'm going to say this but, after seeing this performance, I think Tim basically deserves to go all the way to Top 4. If will stop the cheesebucket performances forever ("Crazy Little Thing Called Love", anybody?) and just stick to this singer/songwriter vibe he has going, I think the guy could be marketable. I liked it and I don't care what anybody says. He reminds me a bit of Matt Nathanson and if you haven't heard his stuff, you should go to ITunes. Now.

Lee Dewyze - "A Little Less Conversation"
I like Lee. I've always liked Lee. I'm glad that Lee is finally coming into his own now, opening up to the audience, and shaking off those nerves. He still has a little ways to go and definitely needs to smile more and look like he's enjoying his time on stage. However, he had some great vocals, he's likeable, and the judges loved him. He's safe.

Aaron Kelly - "Blue Suede Shoes"
Well, if this wasn't a high school drama club performance, I don't know what was. First of all, he should have never picked this song. Second of all, he should have never tried to dress like a bad boy from 1985. I think Aaron is a good singer but being a good singer doesn't make you a star. I fully expect to see him headed home tonight.

Siobhan Magnus - "Suspicious Minds"
Blah, I'm over Siobhan. I get it. You're different and you don't want to be labeled. But you know who will want to label you? Record companies and radio stations. So you better figure out who you are quickly or there's going to be no way to market you to a mainstream audience. The song seemed split in half as the judges said, with one Siobhan singing the first half and another Siobhan singing the other. Though the second Siobhan is the better singer, I didn't care for either.

Michael Lynche - "In The Ghetto"
The judges said it: it was a great song choice. He brought the drama necessary to make the song work without being over the top and he sang it very well. Though I like his voice, I'm over his cocky demeanor. He acts like he's a star before he's even close to being one and he most certainly does not have this competition in the bag. You WERE eliminated last week and remember that, right, Mike? Lose the ‘tude.

Katie Stevens - "Baby, What Do You Want Me To Do?"
Let's start with the good. Katie took a step in the right direction last night by turning up the personality and letting loose vocally. She's a good singer but I didn't love the sassy performance she gave. It didn't feel natural. Though Randy, Ellen, and Kara raved, Simon turned around and called it "loud" and "a bit annoying". Simon Cowell: Bubble bursting since 2002.

Casey James - "Lawdy Miss Clawdy"
I guess I see what the judges were trying to say about this performance, that it was a wasted opportunity. Casey is one of the better singers in the competition and a great musician, too. He should be tearing it up but instead, finds himself often in the middle of the pack. He's going to need to do something to break away from the pack and show America that he deserves to get through the next 4 weeks or so. I'd hate to see people lose interest in him. He's worth keeping around for a good while.

Be sure to tune in and find out which two contestants are leaving tonight on American Idol at 9/8c on Fox.
