The Amazing Race 16

by Vin Convertito

The European adventures continue on The Amazing Race as teams leave Hamburg, Germany for Les Monthairons, France. But the eight remaining teams have no idea where they have been flown to and will have to figure things out as they go. The race begins with last week's winners, Louie and Michael, getting their first clue; a trip to Sainte Menehould to order a fresh baguette from Boulangerie Defontaine.

The detectives take advantage of nearby postal worker to give them directions and it pays off. Louie and Michael easily remain in first as the other teams begin to join in on the baguette search. Behind Louie and Michael are Steve and Allie and on their tail are Joe and Heidi. But don't count out the cowboys who are keeping a great pace in this race.

Michael and Louie are the first to discover that the next clue is actually baked into the baguette. And from what the teams are saying, the baguettes made by Defontaine are incredibly delicious! From there, the teams encounter their detour at Le Main de Massiges, historically renowned as a World War I battlefield. A team can either go "in the trenches" or "under fire."

Each team opts for the trenches and as a result they will have to dress in full WWI attire and army crawl across the field beneath barbed wire fencing. And by the way, enemies will be setting off explosives and WWI planes will be dropping bombs around them! And Louie and Michael will finish first. Their reward is a "blind u-turn" that can be used on any team. Happily, the two choose to derail Joe and Heidi who are in a close third place.

Even happier are Steve and Allie who get to carry on their merry way in a very comfortable second place. Joe and Cord keep their pace and Brandy and Carol, despite Brandy's chronic complaints, hang on to a fifth place position. Dan and Jordan laugh their way across the battlefield in sixth place and Brent and Caite, arriving very late to everything lately, eventually get to model some non-flattering WWI apparel.

"Under fire" are Joe and Heidi who have to complete the detour. This involves deciphering some Morse code as the bombs continue to rain down around them. Their only salvation is that Jeff and Jordan are still late and lost in arriving after finally finding the bakery and finally making it to the battlefield. But Jordan and Jeff still have to face their "speed bump" before they can participate in the detour.

Meanwhile, Louie and Michael have cloaked themselves in their second disguise of the day; they are donning cyclist attire from the year 1903 and are ready to pedal100 year old bicycles Tour de France style! This bike ride will lead them to victory lane for the second week in a row. Behind them, wearing the silliest of fake mustaches, are Steve and Allie. Steve, who mentioned he feels closer to 25 than 50 years old as a result of this race, jokes to his daughter, "nice mustache!"

The smiles are contagious as the third place cowboys jest, "I like horses better than bikes; you don't ever have to pedal a horse!" Dan and Jordan cross the finish line in fourth and in fifth are Carol and Brandy. Fifth place, however, should be cherished as Brandy detested this entire leg of the Race claiming, "I never wanted to prove myself physically." The audience is left to wonder just how she expected to prove herself in the Race.

Brent and Caite finish in sixth even after having to turn around after an exhausting bike ride just to go back to the battlefield to get the clue they had failed to pick up earlier. Because Jeff and Jordan had their speed bump to deal with and Joe and Heidi had their u-turn to battle, Brent and Caite made it back in plenty of time. Jordan and Jeff waste no time fortifying a trench wall as their penalty and are quickly on their way to crawling across the battlefield.

Despite Jordan's complaining, Jeff knows how to motivate a soldier; "put your boobs down on the ground and start moving!" Soon enough, their efforts see the light of day and they take seventh place. Unfortunately for Joe and Heidi the Morse code message proved to be indecipherable after many attempts and Michael and Louie's plan to eliminate them was achieved. "There's sheep and there's wolves. We're wolves," howls a victorious Michael.

And so a message is sent to the other teams and it is all but cryptic; Michael and Louie have taken first place twice in a row and they are out to win the Race. Can anyone stop the momentum they're building?!
