American Idol Season 9

by Gina Scarpa

It's time to whittle the contestants down to a Top 12 tonight on American Idol and the results may surprise you. Who knows what America was thinking with the people that they saved and the people that they didn't pick up the phone for? If there's one thing you can say about this show, it's that you can never really predict where it's going... and maybe that's why 30 million people tune in week after week. For the drama. Because this season, at times, it sure ain't for the singing.

Things kick off with the Top 16 singing Michael Buble's most recent hit, "Haven't Met You Yet". The harmonies were cool and for the most part, it wasn't as cheesy as the group songs that come before it.

There are 12 stools waiting on the other side of the stage for people to fill them and Ryan sends Didi and Siobhan to safety first. Paige and Katelyn and brought to the center of the stage. After Paige's depressing rendition of "Smile" last night, I figure she's the one getting bad news but hold up a minute. She's safe. She gets a stool. Katelyn is headed home. I can't say I was her biggest fan, but I'm not sure she should've taken the fall this week.

Time for some results for the guys. Casey is moving on as is Tim. Now, I know that the Tim thing might surprise a lot of people but I thought he was strong last night and perhaps finally finding his groove. It may be too little, too late for certain fans but I can't help it. I've fallen for that damn cute face of his. He's so little!! That leaves Lee and Todrick. It's not really a surprise to me that Todrick is headed home. He tried way too hard to be original but it just never really worked for him.

Matt Giraud and Scott McIntyre, from season 8, return to the stage to "Tell Her About It" by Billy Joel on dueling pianos. All the judges do is complain about karaoke, hotel bar, lounge performances and then they bring THIS on stage? Having said that, if Matt Giraud was on this season, he would've won. I love that guy.

More results. Big Mike and Aaron move on to the Top 12, leaving Andrew and Alex in the bottom. Now, even though Alex has kind of sucked on these live shows, he was truly great last night. He just needs time to loosen up and relax. Andrew has yet to live up to what he did during Hollywood week but has more to offer as a performer and a creative artist right now... which is why he's staying.   I feel bad that Alex is going home. It should've been Aaron instead, for sure.

Crystal and Lacey are both moving on to the land of stools, which leaves Katie and Lilly to find out who stays and who goes. As they stand there, I feel it's Katie but Ryan shocks everyone when he announces that Lilly is going home. Even Lilly is shocked! I can't say she handled it very well (but I give her tons of props for speaking her mind) because she pointed out that a lot of talented people were headed home and then quipped, "I don't know what America wants to hear." I don't know either, Lilly. I really don't.

Some questions to ponder between now and next Tuesday...

Could things BE more awkward whenever there's an interaction between Casey and Kara?  What the heck is that about?

Is Crystal still not feeling well or is she just genuinely not excited by anything that happens in the competition?

Why was Siobhan so devastated over Alex's exit?  Are they best friends or did a showmance blossom?

Tune in next week to American Idol, when the Top 12 take the stage, Tuesday night at 8/7c on Fox.
