The Amazing Race 16

by Vin Convertito

From Argentina to Germany, The Amazing Race continues to make its way around the globe. And in the lead are Jet and Cord, but not for long as all eight teams will have to adjust to their new surroundings. Flights from Argentina put the teams in Frankfurt and from there the teams will scramble to get to Hamburg, looking for the clue box.

Jet and Cord and Louie and Michael arrive at the same time and it proves to be helpful for both pairs; for the first time this race, teams will have to join up and work together. The clue box reads "get ready to reach new heights" and has one member of each team bungee jumping together from 150 feet over the city. Jet and Michael decide to be the ones to take the plunge. Jet insists on wearing his cowboy hat for the fall, because after all, "a real cowboy's hat never comes off!" Joe and Allie pair up, as do Dan and

Brandy and Caite and Jordan. Of the eight, only Brandy was scared. Very, very scared!

In the lead are both Michael and Louie and Jet and Cord as teams rush to the Statue of Kaiser Wilhelm. Here the teams are faced with

a German detour; will they opt for soccer or sauerkraut? Soccer includes lining up on the field, from the penalty mark and kicking a ball at five different targets in the goal. Sauerkraut challenges the team to eat a full plate of kraut within the time frame of one polka tune played live and loud!

Louie and Michael welcome the kraut and easily devour their plate full before the accordion player could even warm up; "I imagined it was pasta and that was it," explains a happy-to-be-in-the-lead Michael. Jeff and Jordan were the only other team to go for the kraut, and funny enough, they failed in their task. The song ended and instead of going again, the couple decided to try their luck with some ball kicking. Jet and Cord, first timers to the sport, were exceptionally quick to hit the five targets. This stroke of beginner's luck kept the cowboys neck-and-neck with the detectives.

The other teams could not compete with the speed of the cowboys, but most of them got the job done in decent time. Joe's injured knee kept him and Heidi from finishing the challenge and they decided to switch to the kraut eating. And Joe's knee had no problem gobbling down a full plate to keep them from being eliminated. From the detour, the teams are off and running for a bar named Haifisch where the teams will be directed to chug a boot of beer for their final clue.

First to arrive are Michael and Louie who couldn't be any more pleased with the chore. Well, Louie was anyway and he drank his way to an empty glass boot, sparing Michael from having to drink too much of his least favorite beverage. Second to make it to the bar were Allie and her father Steve who also relished at the chance to drink some beer while in Germany!

Joe and Heidi and Carol and Brandy were no strangers to the game and both put back the beer in good time. Struggling somewhat were Jet and Cord and Dan and Jordan who respected the large volume of beer before them. Trailing far behind were Brent and Caite and Jeff and Jordan who kept getting lost along the way and eventually a little tipsy.

This week's pit stop was conveniently located in the Red Light District at Beatles Platz- a tribute to the Beatles who had played one of their first shows at a bar called Indra. Coming in first and second were the detectives followed by Steve and Allie, respectively. Joe and Heidi finished third with Jet and Cord falling to fourth but without ever having to break a sweat. Fifth placed was taken by Carol and Brandy leaving a comfy sixth place open for Jordan and Dan.

Arriving nervously were Brent and Caite who breathed a sigh of relief to learn that they were the seventh team. Even more aware of their late arrival were Jeff and Jordan who knew this could very well be the end of the line. But to their surprise, this was the first non-elimination leg of the Race. The couple will, however, have to face a speed bump next week. Until then, Germany will be home to the eight amazing teams that remain.
