Taking The Stage Season Two

By Lindsay Strouse

This week on Taking The Stage, the students of SCPA get ready for the biggest show of the year—Fame. Tyler has his sights set on the role of Tyrone Jackson, Carlton hopes to get the part of Nick and Emily Silber wants to be the next Sirina (along with every other girl in the school).

Because Anna is a dance major, she already has a spot secured in the show. This leaves her time to help Carlton out with his audition. He serenades her with his audition song. He doesn’t have the greatest voice in the world, but it was definitely pretty cute.

Adam finds a big note on his locker from none other than ex-girlfriend Holly. She even throws in a few “I love yous.” She invites him to come to Spoken Word to listen to something she wrote. I have a feeling this isn’t going to turn out well.

Emily Sones and Ian continue their flirtscapades and talk about different pieces they’re working on. Emily is writing a new song about falling for new people and says she has a pretty good inspiration. Ian wants her to come to Spoken Word so she can hear the piece he wrote about…pretty much the same thing.

At the Spoken Word performance, Carlton waits up for Anna and makes sure he meets his quota for how many times he should tell her she looks pretty. He asks her out on a double date with Ian and Emily for sometime in the near future. Anna looks a little uncertain at first and says, “Sure, you’re like my best guy friend.” Not exactly the words I think Carlton was looking to hear. But what can the guy do. He smiles and says, “well, you’re my best girlfriend.” Oh, innuendos.

Once everyone is settled in, Ian gets ready for his performance. His speech was so adorable and sincere and Emily ate up every word. He’s like a little teddy bear!

Next up, Holly. Dun dun dun. And um, her last name is Angel?! Can you say irony? She brings up a notebook with her and reads a 3 page essay written all about Adam. As if it weren’t obvious enough, she ends with, “Adam, will you be mine?” Ohhhh myyy goshhh, the look on Adam’s face when he heard that. Now that’s embarrassing.

The next day Adam comes to talk to Holly to clear things up once and for all. He is clearly not happy, but Holly thinks her performance was cute and would win him over in a snap. In the most blunt way ever, Adam tells her: we’re done.

In the midst of all the drama, it is finally time for the Fame auditions. Carlton looks really nervous during his song but does really well. The director asks the people trying out if they’ve ever been in love. Carlton spills out the situation between him and Anna, although he thankfully doesn’t reveal her name (although it was pretty obvious who he was referring to).

After auditions, Emily Sones and Adam talk about the events that went down Saturday night at Spoken Word. Emily jokes around saying they’ll find Adam a new girl. He quickly responds, “There is a girl, but she’s taken.” I wonder who he could be talking about?

After a few hours of waiting around the list is finally up. As soon as the paper goes up, the herd of students waiting around rush up to hopefully see their name. Both Carlton and Tyler get the parts they were hoping for, and Emily lands a role in the dance chorus. There are a lot of disappointed faces in the halls, but also many excited ones who can’t wait to start the rehearsal process.
