Amy Michleb from Shear Genius Season 3

by Gina Scarpa and Chandra Clewley

Last night, on Shear Genius, the stylists were given a challenge in which their models had husbands who were all currently serving in the military overseas. Their hair had to be given a 1940s style so that the women looked beautiful when they filmed messages to their men. At panel, the judges came down on Amy, telling her that it wasn't a style, it was a set, and she was eliminated from the competition. Today, she spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about her experiences on Shear Genius.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What prompted you to go on Shear Genius?
A. Amy: I think it's an amazing show and it definitely has a lot of professionalism involved in it. It's not something like a lot of the other reality shows out there. It's focused on what we want to do.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: As the youngest cast mate, did you feel intimidated at all by the other stylists?
A. Amy: I definitely think there was a lot of sense of them trying to intimidate me. I still have a lot of years of experience. I believe that in the industry, it doesn't matter how long you've been in it, if you've got it, you've got it.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: It seemed like everyone was talking about how impossible a dry cut on curly hair is. How did you feel about last night's Short Cut challenge?
A. Amy: I think that was a really good challenge. You really have to pick and work with your tools properly. It's doable. Some of that hair was harder than others but if you're well aware of the physics of hair, and how it works

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: On last night's elimination challenge, did you have a clear vision of how you wanted your models hair to look?
A. Amy: I did have a clear vision. Halfway through, when Orlando came around, he started talking to you and he scares you because he has a different vision. You want to impress the judges. The moment I second guess myself, I knew it could've gone the other way for me. If I second guess myself, it's over.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Why did you decide not to color her hair?
A. Amy: You know what? I think especially watching the episode reminded me why I didn't. I was told that I shouldn't have done it in the first challenge. You're always trying to manage your time instead of them saying, "Oh you should've:" another one they say "You shouldn't have, you should have managed your time better." You never know what they're looking for.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What did you think of the judging last night?
A. Amy: I think all the models looked beautiful and I hope that their husbands were itching on the other end. We spent most of the day crying on set. It was very emotional to be a part of. I know it wasn't my best work. Even if I stayed safe, I know that it wouldn't have been my best work. It's okay that they chose that way. Obviously I'm upset that I couldn't have gone nay further but that's reality tv.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Now that you have left the competition, who is your favorite to win the show? Why?
A. Amy: I definitely think Matthew and Janine.  They've been in the top.  They have a lot of passion. They've been on the top for a while. I love Jon - he's one of my favorites.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Overall, what would you have done differently, if you could do it all over again?
A. Amy: I just would have not second guessed myself. That's where the hair becomes unfinished. Had I not done that, even if it had a 20s/30s feel and hadn't been specific to the era, if it had been clean, I would've still been there.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Do you keep in touch with any of the other competitors?
A. Amy: We've all kept in touch. When it's shown on tv, it's funny to see how people feel about the other competitors. It was professional so there wasn't a lot of bitchiness in the house. We stay in touch with each other quite a bit.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Are you back in Toronto? What are you working on now?
A. Amy: I had another salon that opened this week. I launched a set of brushes and we're working on more hot tools. We're preparing for the New York IBS (International Beauty Show) and we're doing a mainstage presentation there. I have tons of things going on.
