Shear Genius Season 3

Tonight’s Shear Genius Season 3 started with Brian coming off an immunity win in last weeks episode. The guest judge for the Short Cut challenge, Moulay Yacoubi is a world class dry cutting instructor and master stylist.  The models are introduced and they all have curly hair. The challenge is to dry cut the models with a graduated bob, then turn in their tools, and wash, dry and style. Apparently, not being able to perfect the haircut at the end is a huge problem, especially with curly haired girls.

Janine admits to being a little bit sweaty. Brig says that “no one can cut this hair perfectly!” April, who is just adamant that she doesn’t cut graduated bobs, thinks they are boring. During the judgment of the challenge she even goes as far as to say that if someone came in for a graduated bob, she would refer them to Vidal Sassoon. Brig and April end up being the bottom two, while…big shocker…Matthew and Janine are the top two, with Janine taking the win and giving the option of choosing her next model.

For the elimination challenge, the models are military wives whose husbands are all currently serving overseas. After their hair is done they will be taping a video to send to them. The challenge is that he women will be styled in 1940’s hairstyles of finger waves and pin curls. The guest judge is Robert Vetica, a Hollywood hairstylist.

Janine picks her model first, while Brig snickers that Janine picks weird models with hair that doesn’t necessarily work for the challenges at hand, as this time she does with a heavy haired woman. They have 2 hours.

Amy struggles because her hairstyle is turning 1930’s depression era. Janine wants her models hair down, but true to Brig’s warning, the model has too much hair and it just won’t dry. Meanwhile, Brigs model seems willing to go for whatever Brig suggests which turns out to be a fringe bang ala Betty Page.

At the judgment table, Janine’s is not 40’s, it is Marie Antoinette. They liked Matthew’s, even with the hairnet in it. Brig’s had great color, the barrel curls are perfect, it is just too busy. April’s had some finger wave but never got off the ground. Amy had no hairstyle, it looked like it was in preparation for a hairstyle, and the model has roots. Brian had all the right ideas but none of them were finished. Jon knows what he is doing but didn’t follow through with it.

Brig and Matthew are the top two. Brig wins it, even though Robert Vetica was creeped out by the look.

The bottom three are Amy, April and Janine. Janine’s lacked direction and was from the wrong era. Amy’s was not a style it was a set, and you could see the models hair roots. April had a good concept, but she didn’t see it through.

And so, the competition is over for the youngest competitor: Amy.
