Celebrity Rehab 3

By Jackie Helm

This week on Celebrity Rehab 3, I couldn’t keep my eyes dry.  The patients received the treat of inviting their peeps for Friends and Family Weekend.  Focus remained on Mike Starr, former bass player of 90’s rock group Alice and Chains.  Mike is bound by the chains of his past and can’t get past the death of his bff Layne Staley.  Layne was the lead singer of Alice and Chains and died over 7 years ago of a drug over dose.  Layne’s mother, Nancy accompanied Mike’s family for the weekend retreat.

The patients introduced their guests and the tears started when Nancy spoke to the crowd.  She said that she truly believed her son Layne had what it took to beat his disease of addiction.  Layne had been in treatment 13 times and in the ER pronounced dead on 3 occasions.  Nancy described the horrific feeling of learning over her deceased son apologizing that he had not made it.  She begged the patients to stay clean while convincing them that a boring predictable life is sometimes better than that of a celebrity.

Dr. Drew and a psychologist talked to some of the families personally.  Mike Starr, his family and Layne’s mother Nancy were among them.  Mike was able to explain what happened the day that Layne died.  Layne said he was sick and it angered him that Mike was too high to comprehend.  Mike left and Layne later died.  Mike’s zombie like demeanor radiates the pain he feels over Layne’s passing.  He wished he had stayed or had called 911 and he apologized profusely to Layne’s mother.  Nancy told Mike that Layne would forgive him and want him to save his own life.  Dr. Drew hoped this session would help Mike become freed from the guilt of Layne’s death and as well as stabilize his sobriety.

Dennis Rodman and his wife, Michelle had a one-on-one with Drew and the psychologist.  Michelle said that she’d like to have a husband and a father out of Dennis.  Dennis put her on front street revealing that she’s been living like a single woman for 9 years now.  He added that he, “just supports her”.  Dennis told Michelle she can play the role of his wife, girlfriend or homie for all he cares.  Michelle piped back that she wants a divorce.  Dennis didn’t have anything to say after that.  Unfortunately the two don’t have a solid trusting relationship to repair in the first place.  Hopefully this dysfunction won’t contribute to Dennis’s addictions once he leaves rehab.

Part of the patient’s recovery is giving to others.  The patients have to throw a dinner party for their folks.  Accompanied by a designer, the crew successfully pulled together and turned an empty room into an Asian themed dining room.  However, Heidi was slacking as she consumed with the parrot that her friend had brought to visit her.  When the rehab tech told Heidi the bird needed to bounce, Heidi took off.  She skipped the dinner and chilled in a parking lot across the street with her friend and her bird.

Meanwhile, an awesome dinner took place for the other patients and their families.  Mindy took the stage and crowed a beautiful song that she wrote while in jail.  She said that she didn’t know at the time that the song would be for them.  As she sang, pictures of the patients rolled behind her.  Each person was shown as a baby or small child, then as teen and young adult years.  Following were photos of the patients in a mug shot, a court room or just looking tore up.

This part was particularly emotional as the patients reactions were captured as they watched the timeline of their lives. Tom Sizemore captured my heart especially.  He kept repeating, “We were so young”.  You could feel the pain in his heart to see himself so fresh, young and successful in the pictures compared to where he was now.  I also noted that there didn’t seem to be anybody visiting Tom for the Family and Friends weekend.

Finally, the crew said their goodbyes and Dr. Drew begged Heidi to come back.  She said she’d stay clean for Drew and then she bounced with her bird.  Dr. Drew expressed considerable concern over Heidi’s strength and feared that she would relapse if she didn’t complete treatment.

Next week, youngsters visit the rehab center describing their life with an addict as a parent.  Heidi was in a severe car crash and Kari Ann takes off her top!  See you then!
