The Real World: DC

by Matt Anaya

This week things got a little serious on The Real World: DC, as Mike's sexuality and Erika's depression were the main topics of discussion.

The episode starts with Mike being his usual proactive self, meeting with one of the only openly gay congressman, Jared Polis. Polis is from Mike's home state of Colorado and one of the biggest influences in his life.

Mike is such a great kid, curious about life, a free spirit, and open to try anything and everything. The kid is always on the move, looking to learn something new and has an insatiable thirst for life. He is one of the few people that have tried to get something meaningful out of The Real World experience, which is totally admirable.

Although Mike is having a great time in DC, his relationship with Eric is really starting to bug him. He likes Eric, but just as a friend, and wants to maintain the causal relationship but Eric is opposed to it. He wants to start dating ASAP and Mike is just not into it.

Mike's heart is with Tanner back home in Colorado, who he still likes, but needed a friendship with Eric to figure that out. Eric did not want to be used any longer and Mike made a decision to call Tanner to express his love for him.

Surprisingly, a mutual friend picked the phone when Mike called and we found out Tanner's heart was still broken and he did not want to talk to Mike. Mike apparently broke up with Tanner right before the season started and felt horrible and apologized, but had to wait a few days before Tanner accepted his apology.

Mike expressed his love to Tanner in front of everyone, which was kinda silly, but Tanner is expected to visit in the next couple of weeks.

Erika and Josh have had this musical competition/rivalry since the beginning of the season and it started to boil over. Erika has wanted to start a band badly for the last few years, but has struggled to start one, as Josh found a band in no time.

Erika, an extremely emotional person with wicked mood swings, started to get very jealous because she is obviously more talented than Josh. So, of course, the incompetent Josh hooked up with this phenomenal band, sparking Erika's rage/jealousy.

She repeatedly bashed him in front of the roommates, and during an all day jam sesh at the house while Josh was on the phone, Erika jumped on the mic and tried to impress the band. The band liked what they heard but nothing materialized and Erika's already low self-esteem took another hit.

Erika is a sweetheart from my hometown so I have a spot for her in my heart. She was so frustrated with life she desperately needed to talk to her BF, but he was not around his phone and he had 14 missed calls from her. Eek.

Mike, being the cool, admirable, smart young adult tried to help Erika come up with ideas on how to find a band and all the ideas were great and positive, but Erika is too lazy to take action, unlike Mike.

The other roommates are starting to get sick of Erika's complaining, namely Emily, and want Erika to stop her constant whining. I feel badly for Erika, as she seems trapped in a somber stage right now with no one to support her while she is so miserable, but she will be fine and just needs to relax.

Next week, it looks like things get a little wilder as someone gets hurt by either falling or starting the inevitable Real World rumble.
