Ashley Lindley from The Real World: DC

by Gina Scarpa

On The Real World: DC, Ashley has seen her share on conflict thus far with her roommates. She started off on the wrong foot with Ty after a heated religious debate on the first night. On last week's episode, she left to sleep in a hotel after she felt that Andrew got too aggressive and physical with her in a playful fight that turned serious. This week, she butts heads with Erika and calls her a spoiled brat after tensions boil over between them. Ashley has never had a problem telling any of the roommates how she feels but she's also a very passionate, caring, loving person who came to DC for a new and exciting experience. Today, she spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about her time in The Real World house, what she learned about herself, and where she hopes to go from here.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What made you decide to try out for The Real World this season?
A. Ashley: I actually auditioned one before, for the season in Brooklyn. JD was actually in my audition group. Obviously, he made it and I didn't. I came back two years later and now I'm here. I just wanted the experience of being on the show. I was going to get to live in a mansion with people I've never met. It's so farfetched and crazy. I wanted that experience.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You seemed to form an immediate bond with Mike. What drew you to him as a person?
A. Ashley: He has such a warm demeanor about him. He's very warm, open, welcoming, and genuine. You can tell that he's a good soul. As far as our tiffs go, even when he was mad at me, I still wanted to hug him. It's hard to explain. You can't feel people's energy when you're watching tv.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You've had your share of conflict in the house, with Ty, Andrew, and now Erika on this week's episode. What was it about the combination of people in the house that brought on so many arguments?
A. Ashley: Even if I was with my best friends, I would fight with them. It just so happens that my fights are being shown. Mine are more entertaining because I'm blunt and cruel. You fight with people you live with. I don't apologize for the person that you see because it's me. It's still a condensed version of me but it's me.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Last week, Andrew got physical with you after a playful pizza fight. He says he was joking. You were genuinely scared by him. Looking back on it, do you still feel that he acted too aggressively towards you?
A. Ashley: I think it was a combination of him acting overly aggressive and me taking it and overdramatizing it. I was definitely oversensitive. I can't apologize for fear. You can't apologize for an emotion. You can't control the way you're going to take it but I can control the way I reacted.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Did it take a long time for you and Andrew to get back to a normal, comfortable place?
A. Ashley: No. A lot of these episodes, you'll see us fight and then kiss and make up. These people are my family. I'm pissed at them some days. You'll never see me say something in a confessional that I won't say to their face. But I love them. At the end of the day, I think that's how we maintained our relationship. I wanted to make up with him.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: It seems like, often times, the roommates don't take your side in an argument taking place in the house. Did that bother you?
A. Ashley: Oh, hell yeah! I know where I was by the time Erika and I were fighting. I didn't feel like anyone had my back. Emily had Ty early on. Callie had Erika early on. Mike and Emily hit it off. Mike and Andrew were hanging out. I wasn't a part of these teams. Maybe I was a little more defensive.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: We don't see much of Josh. What is he doing that he doesn't end up on camera ever?
A. Ashley: He never hung out with us! He wasn't around. They don't have footage of him because he wasn't there. He would sleep until 5pm, go out, get drunk, stay out late, come home, and sleep until 5pm. That's all he did. He won't deny that. Other than with his band, he never hung out with us. When we asked him to do things, he wouldn't go. I would stay up late and talk to him sometimes.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: In going to DC, were there things that you wanted to accomplish, either in the entertainment industry, politically, or with charities and human rights organizations?

A. Ashley: I think there was a lot I wanted to do. I came in with high expectations. I thought I was going to be involved politically. It's silly now but I thought I would get to help make bills, lobby Congress, help with foster kids. I would try to go to the Capital and they would say, "No, you can't go there." I would say I wanted to help with foster kids and they would say, "No, you can't show them on camera." It was trial and error.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Looking back on it, are you proud of the way that you represented yourself on tv? You were definitely a strong female who spoke her mind.
A. Ashley: I'm proud of the fact that I always said how I felt. Everybody always knew where they stood with me. I never talked to behind people's backs. I stated my opinion. How well I stated it, not so much. You can say your opinion in a much better way. Looking at that, I can see where I need to progress myself.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What did you learn from being on The Real World and where do you want to go from here?
A. Ashley: I learned that I need to be a lot more patient, calm, understanding, trustworthy. I see the things in myself that need to grow. I see the good things about myself. I've learned to accept me for who I am, good, bad or indifferent. It's very weird to watch yourself back. Since the show wrapped, I've been chilling out and taking like a summer vacation. It's actually really great. I'm going to continue with my classes and pursue things once the reality hype has died down.
