Joey Scandizzo from Shear Genius Season 3

by Gina Scarpa

This week, on the season premiere of Shear Genius, the 12 stylists had to come up with a hairstyle that went well with swimwear. The catch? The models would only be wearing bikini bottoms. It was up to the contestants to style the hair so that it covered their breasts. When Joey and Adee failed to cover their models properly, they found themselves in the bottom, along with Amy, whose vision seems to fall apart on the runway. In the end, it was Joey who was eliminated for having a look that the judges felt was not well thought out. Today, he spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about his experiences on the show.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What was your experience, prior to going on Shear Genius?
A. Joey: I own a salon back in Australia. I'm a salon cutter. I've done a bit of editorial stuff. I've been doing this for 16 years.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What made you want to do the show?
A. Joey: That's the thing, I wasn't looking to do it. I got a call one day that Shear Genius was looking for international stylists. I was in Sydney, where the auditions took place. The next thing I know, the casting director called saying they wanted me to fly over to Los Angeles. I tried to get a copy of the show before going. I went in unprepared.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Did you know of the judges on the panel?
A. Joey: I had heard of Jonathan Antin, but not the other guy.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What went wrong in the challenge for you?
A. Joey: The cutting section was pretty cool but on the catwalk, the hair started coming off her breasts after a couple of takes. It was not looking right. She was backstage playing with it and touching it. The rule was that they had to be covered. When the model is jumping around and dancing around, after 4 or 5 takes, by the last one, you can see her breasts. She was backstage and there was nothing we could do.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Do you think there were stylists who should've been in the bottom but weren't?

A. Joey: Yeah, I definitely thought that a couple other people should've been in the bottom. But myself and Adee, our models' breasts weren't covered.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What did you learn from being on Shear Genius that you took away with you?
A. Joey: I walked away thinking that I should've been more prepared.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What are you up to now?
A. Joey: I've been back in Australia for a while now and I've done a couple of shows. I've been to India and Japan and I've been moving around a bit. I don't know. It's been a pretty good year for me so far.
