Project Runway Season 7

by Gina Scarpa

Tonight, on Project Runway, the designers meet up with Tim Gunn at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to learn about their next challenge. He’s surrounded by ten mannequins donning iconic looks from the Curatorial Department of the Costume Institute. First, Tim drops a little bomb. They’ll be working in teams of two. Then, he explains their challenge. They’ll have to create a high end signature look worthy of a master collection. They’ll have a budget of $500, the highest in the history of the show, and two days to complete the look.

The teams are: Jay and Maya, Jesus and Amy, Anthony and Seth Aaron, Janeane and Ben, Mila and Jonathan, Ping and Jesse, and Emilio and Anna.

After gaining some inspiration from staring and studying the designs by legends like Dior and Yves St. Laurent, it’s back to the workroom for the designers to get started on their own look. Immediately, and not surprisingly, Jesse and Ping are not on the same page with what fabrics to choose or who’s doing what. Mila and Jonathan realize that they don’t work the same way. This is just one of those times in the competition where compromise and flexibility will benefit a team greatly.

At the start of the second day, Tim drops a bigger bomb. They’ll have to create a second piece, a look for less, for the average consumer. The designers will have to derive it from the look of another team and they’ll have only 10% of their original budget to pull that off.

It must be nice to be Jay and have immunity. He’s just sauntering around the workroom and BSing with the other designers instead of working more closely with Maya.

Tim makes the rounds and is concerned about everyone being able to finish two looks in such a short amount of time… YOU gave them the challenge! He doesn’t love Ping’s fabric choice for her look for less (and I don’t blame him). Tim seems to really like what Anthony and Seth Aaron are doing.

Ping is like a preschooler. She’s constantly the last one ready - twice at Mood tonight, she was down to the wire and she was the last one to head to the runway show. She ran around the workroom looking for her shoes and seeming confused by the fact that it was time to go. Someone please explain to me what is up with her.

Last week’s burlap challenge had me jumping off of my couch with excitement but this week’s runway show didn’t do too much for me. I think I was expecting more, considering the magnitude of the challenge.

Janeane and Ben, Jesus and Amy, and Emilio and Anna are all safe. Jonathan is in, while Mila is the winner. Jay and Amy are also in, and were part of the top group this week. The bottom four were Seth Aaron, Anthony, Ping, and Jesse. Seth Aaron and Jesse are in. Anthony gets a second chance and Ping is eliminated. Well… I guess all I can say is… Project Runway will be a lot less interesting without her.
