American Idol 9

by Gina Scarpa

After nine seasons of American Idol, and nine seasons of painful auditions, it's tough to tell who sincerely thinks they're a good singer and who's just looking for their fifteen minutes. This week, Chicago and Orlando proved to have some talented locals and it started to become difficult to pick out the best ones. Just because singers like John Park, Shelby Dressel, and Jay Stone didn't make the list this week doesn't mean I'm not impressed. Guest judges Shania Twain and Kristen Chenoweth were on hand to help the judges make some tough (and not so tough decisions). Here are the best and worst of week 2.

BEST

Angela Martin, Chicago

Angela is no stranger to American Idol, having auditioned in seasons 7 and 8 but personal hardships kept her from advancing far in the competition. She returned in season 9, with a killer rendition of Mary J.'s "Just Fine" that won the judges over. They unanimously sent her to Hollywood but family issues could stop her dream cold once again. For more on Angela, read our news story here.

Jermaine Perifoy, Orlando

This guy tried out for Idol in season 7 and didn't make it but came back for a second chance. His Tony Bennett song seemed effortless and he has some serious raw talent. The judges were crazy about him and Randy called it his favorite audition of the season. Let's hope he can keep it together and survive Hollywood because Idol can use a good R&B singer.

Paige Dechausse, Chicago

Nobody loves an inspirational story of courage and hope quite like American Idol and Paige Dechausse certainly has one to tell. Born with severe asthma, she suffered an attack that closed her throat and put her in the hospital, with a 30% chance of survival. Her parents put her headphones on and, with music in her ears, she made a miraculous recovery. Paige sang Sam Cook‘s "A Change Is Gonna Come" beautifully and soulfully (while gripping her inhaler) and was unanimously voted to Hollywood.

Seth Rollins, Orlando

This married father or two entered the audition room, humble and as sincere as can be. He took Frank Sinatra's "Someone To Watch Over Me" and gave it a contemporary spin. He didn't bombard the judges with his voice or try too hard with his performance. It was sweet, it was smooth, and it was good!

Katelyn Epperly, Chicago

Katelyn walked into the American Idol audition room as the love child of Ke$ha and Joss Stone. With her curly blonde hair and funky Bohemian look, she rocked a version of Duffy's "Syrup and Honey" and left guest judge Shania Twain saying, "Mmm..." She may not have what it takes to win, or even to make it to the final group, but she's interesting and we'll be watching come Hollywood week.

WORST

Jarrod Norell, Orlando

Oof, my ears hurt the minute he starting singing his alternative rock version of "Amazing Grace". He seemed shocked that the judges didn't think he was the greatest singer in all of Florida. When he refused to stop singing, security stepped in and literally dragged him out the door and took him out of the building in ‘cuffs. If he was ever on a best anything list, it would be for best exit from an Idol audition.

Curley Newbern, Chicago
Maxwell's "A Woman's Worth" is a sexy song but Curley just sucked the appeal right out of it. It's rare that Simon cracks up at an audition but a combination of the strange falsetto and lack of intonation left the judge unable to keep a straight face. It was a resounding no to Hollywood from the judges and I don't think any of them will ever be able to listen to that song to get in the mood again.

Harold Davis, Chicago
Harold told the cameras that he had spirit, he had soul, and everything it takes to be the greatest... well, except a good voice. He sang some Usher for the judges and you can't help but smile at a guy who thinks he's sexier than he really is. When the judges tried to tell him that the vocals weren't there, he blamed it on allergies. Rule #76: No excuses.

Theo Glinton, Orlando
Theo deserves to be on this list just based on his outfit alone but, of course, there's another reason. He screamed sang Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker" which almost knocked the judges over. The thing is: Theo actually seemed sincere so you can't help but feel bad for the guy. Still... it was awful.

Amy Lang, Chicago
Amy Lang didn't land a spot in our worst of the week because she wasn't a good singer. She landed a spot here because she had the worst idea... act like a complete maniac for the judges. Amy pretended to faint, got up and belted out an Aretha Franklin song, and finished up by thrusting her chest back and forth. The worst part is that she wasn't even a bad singer but Simon was not havin' it with her.

American Idol returns next Tuesday at 8pm ET on FOX.
