Shark Tank

by Michelle Spigner

Tonight, Shark Tank is back and the newest entrepreneurs are more determined than ever to get the sharks’ help in achieving their dreams and making millions.

First up in the tank are Michael and Babz Barnett who are asking for $300,000 in exchange for 10% equity in their product Romp N’ Roll, a chain of children’s play centers. They already have 10 Romp N’ Rolls up and running from Pennsylvania to Puerto Rico and have generated $4 million in revenue over the last five years.

Even with such a great evidence of success, Kevin H., Kevin O., and Daymond are out because its not really their type of business venture. A bad experience at Gymboree causes Barbara to bow out, but Robert is still intrigued. He offers them the $300,000 they requested but for 51% of their company.

While the Barnetts discuss the offer in private, Kevin O. and Robert decide to go 50-50 on the deal. The Barnetts return and counter offer at 20% equity. But Robert and Kevin feel they must have control of the company and take their deal off the table.

Next to take a dive into the tank are Marix Stone and Dr. Nancy Tanchel, with their line of artistic biker helmets that are not only visually distinct but also stronger and safer than others on the market. They are asking $500,000 for 20% equity in their company, Hells Bells Helmets. They own a patent to place 3-dimensional designs on their helmets and estimate brining in $300,000 in sales for their latest design.

Kevin O. and Kevin H. are turned off by the hefty half-a-million dollar price tag and Barbara just isn’t up for this type of challenge. They are out. Daymond offers a 50-50 deal with plans to bring the helmets to several companies. Robert was going to offer Marix and Nancy the money for 70%, but bowed out because Daymond proposed a better.

Matrix and Nancy happily accept Daymond’s offer with hopes that his history in branding and sales will put their helmets atop the head of every motorcyclist in the country.

Alfonzo Dowe is up next, with high hopes his new gadget will impress the sharks enough to give him the investment he is looking for… $85,000 to be exact for 40% equity in his new product, The Twister, a portable golf ball cleaner.

Alfonzo or the “Fonz” as his friends call him is not a businessman, but a policeman who hasn’t quite worked out all of his business practices and strategies. And the sharks can tell. Kevin H., Robert and Barbara are out first because they don’t think the product has the potential to be a success. The Fonz admits that he needs the money to stock his inventory to support orders he doesn’t have yet. Kevin O. points out that he has his business practices backwards and is convinced that the Fonz isn’t ready to go into any type of partnership. Kevin O. is out. Daymond likes the idea but doesn’t know anything about golf and is out.

Dorene Humason is the next entrepreneur. Dorene is the President of the Chef in Black, Inc. and is looking for a $50,000 investment for 10% stake in her product, Jaden Chinese Salad Dressing and Seasoning mix.

When the sharks get a taste of her savory dressing they can’t get enough. And when Dorene tells them she already has her product in 1300 grocery stores they are eating it all up. She continues to answer are their questions flawlessly and they are all very impressed. But in the end, the boys aren’t interested in investing in food product and are confused as to how it might be branded. Barbara is the only one who stays in. She offers Dorene $50,000 for 40% of her business.

Dorene is reluctant to say yes because of the $300,000 she has invested into the company of her own money. She asks Barbara to meet her at 35%.  After a long dramatic moment Barbara finally agrees and she and Dorene become partners.

Andy Sperry is the last to enter the tank and is asking $150,000 for 20% equity in his company, Ink Flip Service. His company allows customers to send in their empty printer ink cartridges in a prepaid container and the company will refill them and send them back. The sharks think he is asking for a hefty sum considering he has only made $10,000 in the last 6 months. Andy wants money for marketing but he doesn’t know how much it will cost. The sharks think not knowing that information is his biggest mistake and investing in his company is too much of a risk. The sharks don’t offer him a deal.

Shark Tank airs Fridays at 8pm ET/PT on ABC.
