Launch My Line Season 1

By Chandra Clewley

“Bare Minimum”

Tonight’s episode of Launch My Line started with Vanessa and Tressa trying to come up with ideas to help bring her garments down to designs that everyone can understand. Vanessa still seems like she feels misunderstood.

The challenge for the 4th garment is an asymmetrical outfit for a night on the town. To gain inspiration, the professionals are taken to an art studio. There, they are introduced to everyday models that strip down to the buff in order for the professionals to sketch. Patrick picks a guy with big tattoos as well as (according to Kathy) big “other” things as well. The professionals seem a bit uncomfortable with the nudity, but sketch away to gain inspiration.

Once back at the design studio, the professionals explain to the expert designers what they have just been ahem, exposed, to. Merle works right next to Galina and Eric, and see’s that they are using the fabric from their first two designs. Merle thinks it looks like a “Vegas circus act”. Dan and Dean aren’t sure that both of the fabrics are necessary. Eric begins to change his mind, but Galina convinces him to stick with their idea.

Louanna and Jim focus on dark tan suede and texture to reflect the dreadlocks their model had. Later, Louanna is upset that they did not pick silk charmeuse for the top as opposed to a jersey-knit to reflect more of an evening look. Jim thinks they will be safe, only because their first design was an evening dress.

Merle and Thai decide on an Oscar-worthy gown that converts into a nightclub style cocktail dress. They keep going back and forth on designs and it is the first time that Thai thinks Merle’s vision might be a bit out of focus. Finally, they agree to a long dress with tiny snaps which make it into a tea length dress.

Patrick and Roberto concentrate on the tattoos their model had, and pick a rich floral fabric once the trim room opens to reflect the body art.

Marilyn and Coco opt for a modern-day Greek goddess draping that will be in a dark blue fabric to keep with the professionalism of the line.

Vanessa and Tressa are searching for an epiphany and finally settle on the gold fabric from the heart jumper to create a dress with large pockets that reflects their ballerina/models small waste and strong hips. Vanessa still feels like she is missing something from the design but once the garment is constructed she loves it.

Kathy and Emil do a full length dress with a beige and bright orange belt.

Galina and Merle clearly do not have the same eye for fashion or anything for that matter. When Galina says that “Today’s motto is to shut up and sew” Merle rolls her eyes and says “That girl has never shut up in her life.” She even goes as far as to say that she is surprised that Galina and Roberto are not actors.

DSquared2’s Dean and Dan announce that the winner of the challenge tonight will win immunity so the stakes are higher.

Marilyn and Patrick are safe after the fashion show. Kathy and Merle are the top two, with Merle taking the win tonight and immunity for next week.

This leaves Eric, Vanessa and Louanna in the bottom 3, and of course, since Vanessa has been struggling with the judges not understanding her vision throughout the entire show so far, she and Tressa are naturally eliminated with the judges complaining that most women don’t want their hips to look big.
