Kathryn McCormick from So You Think You Can Dance Season 6

by Gina Scarpa

On the season finale of So You Think You Can Dance, the six dancers were eliminated one by one until only Russell Ferguson remained, making him America’s Favorite Dancer.  Contemporary dancer Kathryn McCormick was the last female standing and came in third place, after a stellar season full of memorable moments.  Today, Kathryn spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about her experiences on the show and what she’d like to say to the fans that supported her all season long.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: I saw that injury that Russell suffered during the finale.  How much does this competition take its toll on you physically and mentally?
A. Kathryn: Our bodies are tired anyway and we had that extra dance that we had to do.  We had different partners.  It was a lot but at the same time, we knew it was our last week and we knew that we wanted to be here and fight.  We had that extra adrenaline.  We made it work!  We’re definitely exhausted.  It’s a lot.  There are a lot of times your brain is constantly on overload.  Your body wears down after a while.  This season, everyone was getting hurt but I think we held up really well compared to other seasons.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Have you had a chance to talk to the dancers from last season?
A. Kathryn: The season 5 dancers have come a couple of times.  That was really nice.  They’re all so supportive.  We weren’t sure how they would act towards us.  They were all so supportive because they had been through everything that we had been.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: How did you feel when Nigel said this week that you were his favorite female in the competition?
A. Kathryn: That was really special to me because it was something that I didn’t even think or know.  I didn’t know that he thought that about me.  The entire season, he hasn’t really said that.   That was really special to me.  I respect his opinion.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
Do you have a favorite dance that you hope makes it on the tour?
A. Kathryn: That is a big question!  Honestly, I cannot say one dance that I didn’t like.  Every dance that I did was special to me.  It was a blessing for me to be able to share those stories.  I definitely want to do the contemporary dance to “2 Steps Away” with Legacy again, that was really special… and the hip hop with Russell.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: The judges talked a lot about how you peaked at just the right time in the competition.  Is there a moment that you can pinpoint that you made a big step forward?
A. Kathryn: Yes, there is.  When me and Legacy did the waltz - that was the moment that I just let go of thinking so much about everything and trying to be perfect.  You have to relax, you can’t always be perfect or let the pressure get to you.  Legacy made me learn that I always rely on my technique but he doesn’t at all.  He relies on his performances.  Being with him makes me realize that I think way too much.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
Are you looking forward to heading home and spending the holidays with your family?
A. Kathryn: I am.  I’m going home today so that’s going to be really nice.  I can relax and process everything.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Is there anything that you want to say to your fans who supported you this season?
A. Kathryn: I just want to say, of course, thank you for everything and thank you for giving me the chance to be able to perform this long.  It doesn’t matter where you come from or how small you are… you can do big things.
