Darrell Taylor from The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Ruins

by Gina Scarpa

This season, on The Real World/Road Rules Challenge, Darrell had a free pass to the finale.  After volunteering to go into The Ruins against Cohutta, and winning, his team vowed not to send him in again.  Yet, Darrell ended up leaving the game before crossing that finish line, after a night of drinking and trash talking went too far.  Frustrated with his losing team, Brad took out his aggression on anybody and everybody, but gunned mostly for Darrell.  After being pushed too far, Darrell threw some punches and he and Brad were sent home.  Today, Darrell spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about his experiences on the show and gives his take on the fight that cost him.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What made you come back for another challenge?
A. Darrell: I was trying to win some money, plain and simple.  I don’t go for the fame.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You’re in a house with a lot of people who cause drama.  What was the experience like?
A. Darrell: I always try to avoid the drama.  I’ve never been one for it.  This time, on the challenge, there were no Ipods, no going out for a run… we were on lockdown day and night.   I’ve done four other challenge and they cut down on our freedom this time.  Usually, there’s a cell phone in the house and we didn’t even have that.  We used to do 4 challenges a week and this time, it was only 2.  It was boring as hell.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Are there people that you are truly friends with, that you talk to outside of the game?
A. Darrell: Yeah I pretty much talk to everyone but I talk to Derrick the most.  I talk to Kenny and Evan here and there… Syrus, Veronica, and Susie.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: There was a lot of talk about keeping Casey so that it would benefit your team in that final challenge.  If you had stayed, would you have wanted here there holding her team back, or would you rather have competed against better players for the money?
A. Darrell: Oh, I’m just trying to win the money.  I don’t care if she’s there or not.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: We’ve never really seen you or Brad get the way you did on the night of the fight.  How long did it go on for before it escalated?
A. Darrell: Honestly, I don’t really remember.  It takes two to tango.  If I hadn’t been drinking, that wouldn’t have happened.  I was irritated and downstairs, he slapped me and I slapped him back.  He followed me upstairs and then it got blurry.  I’d say, maybe 10-15 minutes.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: In your exit interviews, it seemed like neither of you meant for it to go as far you did.  Have you two patched things up?
A. Darrell: Yeah, me and Brad are good friends.  It’s hard to believe that it happened.  I woke up the next morning kind of disoriented.  There’s no hard feelings.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Do you feel confident that, if that fight hadn’t happened, your team would’ve stayed true to their word and let you get to the finale?
A. Darrell: Yeah, I would’ve been there.  They wouldn’t have screwed me.  They like me and more importantly, they’re scared of me.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
Was this your last challenge or do you have another one in you?
A. Darrell: Actually, I got one more in me.  I wanna win, I’m not gonna lie.  When they took everything away, our freedom and everything, I was like, “F this.”  On other challenges, we would get to go out and get away from the game.  It was an insane situation and we looked dumb.  If you were us, you’d do the same crap.

The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Ruins airs Wednesdays at 10pm ET on MTV.

Well, I don't think it's an issue of being black or white but I will say this. I find it aggravating that MTV lets contestants get in each other's faces and then kick off the person who reacts. Darrell was pushed and pushed until he couldn't deal with it anymore. If someone is in your face the way Brad was, cameras or no cameras, a lot of people would've reacted the way Darrell did. I like Brad but I think he should've been kicked off and Darrell should have been able to stay. He got screwed, he knows he got screwed, but he has a great attitude about it... probably because he wants to come back for another challenge! :) I hope he does, I hope he wins.

Considering the show completely and utterly screwed Darrell over, that's a darn good attitude to have. I've noticed he's always had the attitude of a trooper unlike the rest of these Challengers on this show. All the rest of people (men included) whine and moan about going into the elimination round and engage in shady alliances to win, that is, except for Darrell. What's amazing is Darrell had the best record out of everyone on this show and was undefeated before they screwed him on this Challenge. Darrell should NOT Have been thrown off the show. Numerous competitors have challenged each other to wrestling matches and suffered injuries in those wrestling matches without being kicked off. Contestants are only thrown off when there's an assault with no agreement to wrestle. Considering Darrell was challenged to a wrestling match repeatedly by Brad, it should have been viewed as such. Brad wasn't only challenging to Darrell to a wrestling match while Darrell refused numerous times, he was harassing him with derogatory trash talk and verbal abuse while repeatedly getting up in his face and shoving him. Darrell only defends himself when Brad gets up in his face and shoves him again, and he's kicked off the show. Darrell is cornered into a situation where he was clearly trying to avoid a fight while protecting his pride on national television. Darrell also noted that Brad slapped him and proceeded to follow him upstairs which wasn't aired on television. Brad wasn't even penalized. He was willing to do all of that because he knew he would lose and go home with nothing. The only person who was penalized with Darrell. By unfairly sending him home, the show screwed him out of 30,000 dollars and his record of being undefeated on the show. The show basically allowed Brad to get his way in being jealous. I just love how everyone on the show kept on commenting how Darrell had made a 30,000 dollar mistake when he was completely screwed over. Darrell, you have the talent but please watch your back on shows with mostly white contestants and a predominately white fanbase.
