Survivor: Samoa

by Gina Scarpa

Tonight, on Survivor: Samoa, the former Galu members had no remorse about blindsiding one of their own, Erik, at the last tribal council.  They could afford to dispose of him and they’d still have the numbers in their favor.  In fact, it looks bleaker and bleaker for Foa Foa with each passing day.  The problem is: I love Foa Foa (and their secret alliance member, Shambo) so I’m praying for a miracle here.

The merged Aiga tribe meets up with Jeff for a reward challenge.  They’ll be split into two teams of five (meaning someone has to sit out).  Two at a time, players will race out to grab a pole with white and black coconuts on it.  Positioned correctly, the poles will form a sequence of four numbers.  The last player must find the numbers, in the correct order, on a series of wheels while blindfolded in order to win.

Natalie sits out and the teams are: Russell, Mick, Jaison, Brett, and Laura vs. Dave, Monica, Kelly, John, and Shambo.  Natalie supports her Foa Foa team and if they win, she’ll get the reward to.  Everyone is playing for a trip to a natural rock slide, complete with picnic lunch.

Russell and Laura’s team actually get off to a decent start but quickly fall behind when it is time to figure out the numbers.  Dave and John’s team are able to guess the numbers, give the combination to Monica, and win easily the way Galu has all season long.  At their luncheon, the winning team receives a clue that the hidden immunity idol is back in play and at the camp…

But wait…

Russell, aka the smartest Survivor player ever, already figured out that the idol could be back in play so he goes off looking for.  After what seems about five minutes, he finds it under a bridge.  Luckiest.  Guy.  Ever.

He’s not going to show it to anyone right?  Wrong.  He quickly finds Shambo and shows her and then tells the rest of his Foa Foa tribe.  As long as no one else finds out, things could get very interesting.  Shambo loves every minute of it and dreams of sending Laura’s butt to the jury.

For tonight’s immunity challenge, players must use a rope and grappling hook to retrieve two bags of puzzle pieces.  The first three players to do will move on to the final round.  In the final found, the three remaining players must open their bags which each have a puzzle piece in it.  Only one piece will fit into a game board that looks like Perfection.  Once they find a match for their puzzle piece, another piece will pop down, and so on and so forth.  The first player to match all the puzzle pieces and complete the game board wins.

It sort of looked like Russell wasn’t trying as hard as he could have but it might just be me.  In any event, Mick, Shambo, and Laura end up making it to the final round.  Mick and Shambo get a nice head start but once Laura finds the correct puzzle piece and match to start her game board, it is LIGHTS OUT.  She flies through that game board, and if I were Mick and Shambo, I’d be embarrassed but how poorly I performed.  The curse of Foa Foa lives on… and I’ll throw Shambo into that mix since she’s aligned with them.

The Galu tribe decides that it’s time to send Russell home, not knowing that he holds yet another immunity idol.  Russell decides that his tribe will throw Kelly some votes, blindside her, and take Laura’s best friend out of the game.  If you can’t take down the queen, you can take down the princess…

At tribal council, it’s very clear that tribal lines run deep.  Galu sits smugly, feeling that the numbers are clearly in their favor.  After they cast their votes, Russell plays the idol and you could pick Dave’s jaw up off of the floor.  One by one the votes are cast for Russell and one by one, they are discarded.  Finally, Kelly’s name comes up and she’s pissed (rightfully so) that she just got blindsided.

Side note: Kudos to Shambo for her awesome acting abilities.  Her feigned looks of shock and confusion had me laughing out loud tonight.

Galu… not sittin’ as pretty as you thought, huh?  It was a 7-4 game in your minds at the start of tonight’s episode but what you don’t realize is that you’re now 5-5… dead even.  Oh, this is good.
