Peter Sabasino from So You Think You Can Dance

by Gina Scarpa

It’s been a tough road for tappers on So You Think You Can Dance this season.  First, Ryan Kasprzak was unexpectedly cut during Vegas week.  Then, Bianca Revels, Phillip Atmore, and Peter Sabasino became the first three tap dancers ever to make the Top 20, only to be cut in the first 3 weeks of the show.  This week, Peter and his partner Pauline Mata drew the dreaded quickstep out of the hat and, on last night’s live results show, they were both sent home.  Today, Peter spoke to reporters in a press conference call about his experiences on the show.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Do you think that So You Think You Can Dance is the right venue for tappers?
A. Peter: Yeah, I think that it was time for tap to be on the show.  I definitely think that So You Think You Can Dance needs more of it.  I’m proud that the three of us got to represent

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When Ryan was cut during Vegas week, what was your reaction?
A. Peter: I was very surprised because Ryan is a very amazing tapper and an amazing person.  I feel he was absolutely made to be on the show.  When I found out that he was cut in Vegas, I definitely was upset.

Q. Nigel was so hard on the solos last night.  How much of that do you think is that 30 second time limit?  Is it too tight?
A. Peter: I think that 30 seconds definitely is a tight time to really show the judges and America who you are as a person.  You can’t do your best stuff in 30 seconds.  I definitely think that, in my opinion, I would like to see the solos be 45 seconds to a minute.

Q. Tell us a little more about your special education dance class that you teach.
A. Peter: The place that I volunteer is Spin, which is dance for special people in the northeast.  They help individuals with disabilities get jobs and, every year, they put on a talent show.  I go in there 2-3 times a week and I go in there so they can perform.  I absolutely love it and they put on an amazing show.  I’m always greeted with a smile and a hug.  It’s a really good feeling.

Q. Are you afraid that tappers might be discouraged to try out in the future?
A. Peter: No, I think that, if anything, I hope that I inspired tappers to audition for the show.  I know that when the show first started, tappers were very rare.  I hope that I inspired tappers to audition because if I can make it, any other tapper can make it.  All it takes is a little bit of belief in yourself.

Q. Should the judges try to get other dancers to learn tap?
A. Peter: I think that it would be nice if, one season, they attempted to have the other dancers learn tap.  I understand where they’re coming from when they say you can’t teach someone to tap in the amount of time that we have.  I believe that you can teach someone to do a time step in the amount of time that we have.  I think that tap dancers are at a little bit of an unfair disadvantage.  At the same time, you have to look at it from where the judges are coming from.

Q. You received good feedback overall from the judges then Nigel said he didn’t think you were going anywhere.  How did you go into last night’s results show?
A. Peter: I went into my performance confidence because the quickstep was a new style that I had never learned before and I was excited to learn it.  I definitely kept my mind open.   I thought my solo was strong last night but I guess the judges felt otherwise.

Q. What are your future plans?
A. Peter: My plans for after the show are to keep my options open.  I don’t want to commit to one thing and overlook other opportunities that are going to come to me.  I think that would be unfair to myself.  I’m definitely going to keep my arms open and take it day by day.  The one thing that I would love to do is start my own tap show.  I feel like there aren’t any shows anymore that are primarily tap based.  I would like to do that.

Be sure to tune in to So You Think You Can Dance when the Top 14 take the stage, Tuesday at 8pm ET on FOX.
