Pauline Mata from So You Think You Can Dance

by Gina Scarpa

Last night, on the live results show of So You Think You Can Dance, it was the first time that the dancers were able to find out how America felt about them.  The judges made their predictions as to who would end up in the bottom three were right about two of the couples.  Pauline and Peter, Ellenore and Ryan, and Karen and Kevin were all asked to dance for their lives after pulling in the lowest number of votes.     Mollee and Nathan, who had performed a less than perfect samba, were safe thanks to their fans.  After performing their solos, the judges were unanimous: Pauline and Peter would be leaving the show.  Today, Pauline spoke to reporters in a press conference call about her experiences on the show.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You had so many highs and lows from Vegas week all the way to making the show, from injuries to several different dance partners.  How do you handle the stress of the competition?
A. Pauline: I think it’s just a learning experience.  I did audition in season 5 so I know what it’s like to go through it and see the ups and downs.  Having that ankle injury, I thought I was going to get cut.  When they did, it was another shock.  I had Billy as a partner and having him gone was stressful but when I found out who the replacement was, I was excited because I knew him from the previous season and this season.  Then, he’s gone and Peter steps in as a partner, it was all stressful.  In my head, I was always saying, “Things happen for a reason.”  Billy had to leave for a reason.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Would you have fared better had you drawn your own style in the first two weeks, or even hip hop?
A. Pauline: I think it would’ve shown more of my strengths rather than some of my weaknesses.  In all of that, it shows the judges and America that I’m capable of doing other styles.  I’m capable of picking up choreography and making it my own.  I don’t want to say I can fake it but basically, that’s what it is because obviously, I’m not a ballroom dancer.  The technique will be a little off because I was never trained but I did what I could.  If I had gotten hip hop, it would’ve showcased a lot more than quickstep or waltz.

Q. Do you think that Nigel was too hard on the ladies and their solos last night?
A. Pauline: I think Nigel… the way he compared us to the last season… I mean, it’s fresh on their minds.  It’s understandable that they still look at Jeannine and Brandon and Ade and their solos.  I felt that because they kept saying that this season was the best season ever, he was a little hard of us. It’s going to make us that much stronger.

Q. Did you go into last night’s results show confident?
A. Pauline: I thought we could’ve been in danger because it’s the quickstep.  It’s hard for America to relate.  The fact that we did well was a shocker to both of us because it wasn’t a train wreck, like Mary said.  Coming into the results show, I thought it could be really good because we got good feedback but, at the same time, it could be bad because of the whole “the quickstep is the kiss of death”.  It’s kind of hard to relate because if they’ve never done the quickstep, then they don’t know how hard it is to do it.

Q.  Did you have a sense of dread when you found out what style of dance you would have to do?
A. Pauline: I did at first when I drew quickstep.  I already knew in my head, “Oh no!  This can be really bad.”  Coming into rehearsal, our choreographer started teaching us and it wasn’t bad at all.  It was really fun and really energetic.  I felt like there wasn’t one dull moment in that rehearsal.  I did feel some dread that this was what everyone did not want to draw out of the hat.

Q. Any predictions for the Top 2 or 3 dancers this season?
A. Pauline: I have no idea because the Top 14 is so amazing in their own individual way.  I don’t even think I can choose the top 2 or 3 dancers.  Everyone is amazing on that show and I think it’s going to be tough for America.

Be sure to tune in to So You Think You Can Dance when the Top 14 take the stage, Tuesday at 8pm ET on FOX.
