America's Next Top Model 13

by Michelle Spigner

On tonight’s episode of America’s Next Top Model, it is down to the final five and the competition is getting fierce!

It is down to just five and the girls are excited to have made it this far but are more determined than every to keep pushing on because they know just how close they are. The girls receive a Tyra mail that reads, “You never know what can come to shore. I hope you look appropriate.” They think they are going to be animals that have washed up on shore. That night Sundai opens up about her past and how she ended up in a foster care. She is very determined to become a successful and motivated to win Top Model and make all her dreams come true..

The next morning it is Laura’s birthday. And the girls cook her a special breakfast of eggs and a Hawaiian favorite, Spam. The girls arrive at a deserted island for their lesson and challenge of the day and a kyak of men row toward the shore with a blonde beauty. It is supermodel and Victoria Secret Angel, Marisa Miller who is a petite model herself, at only 4’ 8”.

She gives the girls a lesson how to look sexy but not sleezy in swimsuit shots. She has the girls get soaking wet and then roll in the sand and shows them how to pose under the shower and be sexy while they pose for a shot. Marisa leads the girls up a rocky cliff and to a ledge where the rocks meet the shore. Nigel greets them to explain their photo shoot challenge. The girls are to jump off the cliff and strike a beautiful graceful poses despite their rather extreme situation. But of course there’s a catch. They will only get one chance to get it right.

Birthday girl, Laura, volunteers first and goes for it. She strikes a great action shot but her face and body aren’t really doing the right thing to make it a fashion shot. Erin is next. She has been in the bottom two the last two weeks. For someone who started off on the top, and then got increasingly weaker and weaker she knows she needs to step it up big time. But when she jumps off the cliff she overposes and ends up looking like a cheerleader. Nicole is next and uses Marissa’s advice to pose in a way that maximizes her curves. Sundai is last and does not jump but leans off the cliff in an attempt to fall into a stunning pose. Instead she hits the side of her face on the surface of the water. Ouch.

Nigel and Marissa review the girls’ film. The winner will receive a chocolate pearl necklace valued at $5,000 as well as extra frames at the next shoot. The judges pick Nicole as the winner. They thought she really connected with the camera and caught a graceful pose. As the winner she picks one of the extra girls to get extra shots. Nicole picks Sundai. And Sundai picks Laura to get extra frames too, and Laura picks Jennifer. But only four out of the five girls can get extra frames so Erin is left out.

That night the girls have a huge b-day bash for Laura. But Erin gets a little anal about her cupcakes and the cake being super perfect. The girls think she is mad because everyone thinks she is a brat and she didn’t get picked to get the extra frames. The girls make all kinds of food for Laura and they have a lovely time.

The Tyra mail that night reads, “Tomorrow you’ll be getting friendly with some local natives.” The girls again think it will have something to do with animals. They arrive at a harbor the next morning and Jay Emanuel is there to greet them. He announces that they will be doing an underwater shot with world-renowned photographer Russell James. All of the girls with the extra frames, well everyone except Erin will have the opportunity to go under two times and will go over there film with Jay and get some feedback in between rounds.

Laura is first and she is nervous that she might drown. So nervous that once she goes down and the divers take away her ventilator she begins to hyperventilate. She was able to calm herself down and overall she improved on her performance as she went. Jay gave her some good feedback and during her second round she used it to take some pretty good shots.

Nicole is next and Jay thinks she definitely got a good shot during her first round. He thought she gave them some great variety of ballet and sereneness. The girls are nervous when she goes because they all see her as the biggest competition and secretly hope that she does poorly.

Jennifer is up next but she really isn’t getting submerged under the water like the photographer Russell wanted her to. It was good she had the extra frames because Jay was able to correct her. When she went back under the second time she really nailed it.

Sundai is next and couldn’t really go far under because of her asthma. Russell gets annoyed with her because she keeps having problems with the elements, and the water getting in her nose and ears. During her feedback, Jay says that her problems are more mental than actual and that she needs to refocus and just do it. The second time she does better but doesn’t nail it.

Erin is last and Russell is disappointed that she didn’t go deep enough. He thinks she blew her opportunity to get an amazing shot. But because she has limited frames, she doesn’t have a second chance. She thinks she did the best she could.

The next day the girls meet with judges and guest Marissa Miller sits on the panel. The judges think Sundai’s shot was limiting because of her complications with the water and her asthma. Her body is good but her face missed the mark. Laura had great body language but she didn’t find the light with her face. The judges just love Jennifer’s picture and think it is  stunning. She looks very long and tall and she had a great face. Nicole is next and they think the photo was different and she had an interesting look in her face. Her position is unexpected and looks like she is dancing in the water. The judges don’t like Erin’s shot. They don’t think that it is very strong. Tyra tells her she has to do less; less is more with her.

The judges call Jennifer first as best picture of the week. Next is Nicole. Then Laura. Sundai and Erin are in the bottom two. The judges don’t like the fact that she had so many excuses during the photo shoot. The judges don’t see why Erin is getting weaker, week after week. But the judges still think Erin’s photo is stronger the Sundai’s. And so Erin gets a second chance and Sundai is sent home.
