Dancing With the Stars 9

By David McAlpine

Last night on Dancing With the Stars, Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff took the lead after their lightning fast jive, while Mark Dacascos fell from first to last, though his partner, Lacey Schwimmer, was sick for the dancing broadcast.

The repeat this week? It’s the group tango! Given it was Joanna, Donny and Kelly, who are all comfortably safe this week in my mind, I wasn’t surprised. Plus the dances last night (minus Aaron’s and Joanna’s) were kind of flat. It just seemed like an ok night—nothing too spectacular.

Tonight, it’s another double elimination, meaning the pair with the lowest combined audience votes and judges points will automatically go home, then the 2 next lowest scores will compete in a dance-off. After that dance-off, the judges vote on who they want to stay and who they want to go.

We head into the results right away. Safe: Kelly Osbourne and Louis Van Amstel. Interesting choice, considering those who performed the best (i.e. Aaron and Joanna) are usually announced safe first. In the bottom three: Mark Dacascos and Lacey Schwimmer? Surprise? Not at all; they lacked any amount of judges’ points to escape the bottom three.

Next it’s a music break by singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat. I was thinking about her the other day, wondering where she disappeared. Now that I’ve seen her on Dancing With the Stars, I know she’s still a little famous.

The second couple safe: Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson. The second couple in the bottom three: Michael Irvin and Anna Demidova. So, by process of elimination, that leaves Aaron and Karina, Joanna and Derek, and Mya and Dmitry, the three frontrunners. And one is going to be in the bottom three? This one’s a nailbiter, folks.

But first, the Ballas Hough Band performs. For those of you familiar with the last name of the DWTS pros, that is Mark Ballas and Derek Hough…in a band. They performed their single “Move,” which I didn’t think was that bad. My friend, however, had to walk out of the room, so I’d suggest to listen to it on YouTube and see for yourself. Then there’s a montage about the “rules of the ballroom.” Rule #1? Don’t talk about the trophy—it’s forbidden.

Now to the moment of truth as the three pairs sit there, waiting their fate. The first safe is Mya and Dmitry Chaplin, which throws everyone for a loop. The other one safe is Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough, meaning Aaron Carter, who received two 10s on his individual dance last night, is in the bottom three. Does no one vote for this kid? Can’t he get a shot? I was so disappointed—he just can’t win!

Another musical interlude, this time by Rod Stewart, who I guess just happened to drop by, singing “It’s the Same Old Song.”

Back to what we’ve all been waiting for: the elimination results. The couple with the lowest overall score last night is…Michael Irvin and Anna Demidova. You can see the shock on Lacey’s face because she totally thought they were going home, but now they’ll be dancing against Aaron and Karina.

Mark and Lacey are up first with their cha-cha, obviously out to prove that last night was a slip-up and that they should be here. It’s spicy and upbeat, and the judges really enjoy it. However, Aaron and Karina come out with their jive from last night and it’s even spicier and more upbeat. Carrie Ann thought it was better than the night before and Bruno flat out told them he didn’t think they deserved to be in the dance-off. Well duh, that’s why you gave them a 29 last night.

So, it comes as no surprise when the judges unanimously vote to eliminate Mark Dacascos and Lacey Schwimmer.

Tune in to Dancing With the Stars on Monday at 8/7c on ABC to see who can dance to the top and who’s got the best shot at going home!
