The Amazing Race 15

Last week on The Amazing Race, the teams raced around Dubai, seeing all the wonders of the desert-barren city. Really, they didn’t do much else. In fact, it all came down to a water slide, where Mika’s fear of heights stopped her and Canaan from completing the task. The other teams easily passed them up, putting them in last place and eliminating them from the race.

This week, the teams are leaving the Palm, which is apparently a man-made island larger than 800 football fields, to head to Amsterdam in The Netherlands. Of course, the first flight out is well after everyone leaves the pit stop, so everyone ends up on the same flight.

After a lot of thought, Sam and Dan decide to open up to everyone and tell people they’re gay, which, honestly, would not have been surprising to me. Maria and Tiffany aren’t shocked at all, nor do they care, but Ericka seemed a little flipped out about it. Then again, she’s always kind of in her own world to begin with, so something like that might not have been anything she thought about.

Once they landed in Amsterdam, teams had to find Afsluitdijk (try saying that one more than once) and get to a monument in the middle of the city. Since everyone is on the same flight and no one knows nothing about The Netherlands, everyone (except Brian and Ericka, who have a car problem) pretty much gets there at the same time.

Next the teams are off to Groningen (another unknown Dutch city) to do the roadblock, which involved going up into the bell tower and counting how many bells were in the carillon. Of course, there was a twist. First off, it was very dark and second, the player kept ringing the bells, so it made it hard to count. Eventually Meghan and Dan counted 62, which was the right number. On the way down, Dan tells Tiffany the number, so she really doesn’t have to try. Ericka has a mini-meltdown, both because of the dirtiness of the room and the difficulty of the task, but she eventually gets the clue.

Next is a trip to Vierhauzen, where they encounter a Detour: Farmer’s Game or Farmer’s Dance. In Farmer’s Game, teams had to play three holes of Farmersgolf, which is basically golf with a huge golf ball and a club with a clog on the end. The catch: they had to finish each hole in under 8 strokes. In Farmer’s Dance, teams had to hit the bell on top of a “high-striker,” then learn a traditional Dutch folk dance to perform in front of a crowd, then eat salted herrings and onions to get the clue. Either way, they had to put on ridiculous Dutch costumes (per usual on the Race).

Meghan and Cheyne and Sam and Dan both head for the golfing, which is much harder than they anticipated, both because of the game itself and the windy conditions blowing the ball around when they hit it. Sam and Dan finish it the first time, getting to the pit stop first and winning themselves a dune buggy. Meghan and Cheyne get it on the second try, putting them in second. New power duo of teams? Possibly.

Gary and Matt take the dance…until they realize they had to eat fish, which, apparently, Matt doesn’t eat. So, they head over to the golf, which they demolish. However, their switch cost them the time it took for Flight Time and Big Easy to finish the dance, which is obviously their thing, considering they work with choreography all the time.

So now it’s down to Maria and Tiffany and Brian and Ericka. Brian and Ericka are very behind. Way, way, way behind. But Tiffany and Maria, for some reason, can’t seem to get past the detour. Yet Brian and Ericka manage to catch up to them, though only because they didn’t bike to the Detour, they have to take a 30-minute penalty.

It all cancels out though, as Maria and Tiffany flip-flop between Detours, not being able to accomplish either one. They take turns trying to hit the high-striker and failing. Then they go play golf, get frustrated and come back. Eventually, it’s clear that they’re not going anywhere or finishing anything, so their solution is to…quit the race? It comes way out of left field, especially since they say they’re quitting because they can’t finish the task due to the weather. What if it were a non-elimination leg? I’m not 100% sure they thought about it. Regardless, Maria and Tiffany’s quitting made them the seventh eliminated team from the Race.
