America's Next Top Model Cycle 13

by Michelle Spigner

On tonight’s episode of America’s Next Top Model, the girls have the opportunity to show the judges just how good they look on moving film in their first Cover Girl shoot. But first they must learn from the pros just how it is done.

The girls receive a Tyra mail that reads, “You think you know this competition in and out? We’ll see.” The next day the girls arrive at CBS studios and walk in on an interview with The Insider’s Lara Spencer and comedian, Ant. Ant is a difficult interviewee and is quickly offended by the questions Laura asks and keeps getting off topic. Lara gets him back on track and keeps the interview moving smoothly. But the interview is all a scene to show the girls just how things can go a little haywire in interviews. It is the job of the interviewer to think on her feet and get things moving back in the right direction.

The girls take turns interviewing Ant, who is playing an actress staring in a new movie. The girls learn how to take cues from their interviewee and go off the last thing he said to keep the interview moving if they have run out of questions.

After the practice round the girls get the rules of their challenge. They arrive at the set of the entertainment news show “The Insider” where they will be interviewing 90210 star Jessica Stroup. Lara Spencer and Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen magazine Ann Shoket explains that they will have two minutes to fill and will have the teleprompter to read off, but no matter what they cannot stop. The winner will be in a beauty spread in Seventeen magazine.

But of course there is a catch to make the challenge a bit harder. After the introduction and the first question scroll up the teleprompter, it displays a jumble of words and number and then goes black. From the there the girls have to think on their feet and come up with questions to keep asking Jessica. Most of the girls are able to recover and keep things moving but Laura and Nicole stumble. Laura takes a very long pause once the prompter goes blank and then curses before finally picking back up with a question. Nicole gets so nervous after the prompter fails to display the next question that she starts to ask inappropriate questions like, “Do you have children yourself?” to 20-year old Jessica. Ooops!

Lara and Ann pick Erin as the winner. They thought she was very charming and a great conversationalist and did not miss a beat when the prompter failed. Erin picks Jennifer and Rae to join her on the photo shoot.

When the girls return to the house the doorbell rings and they open the door to find seven blue boxes all tied up with ribbon on the doorstep. Along with the boxes is a note that reads, “Tomorrow you will be filming your first Cover Girl commercial. We have sent kits to assist you as you will be writing your own scripts,” The boxes contain the Cover Girl Eyelights make-up collection a pad of paper, a pen and a stop watch. The scripts have to be 25 seconds long and have the Cover Girl Eyelights catch phrase at the end.

The girls get right to work, writing a script that brings out their personality and also sells the product. Erin, still excited from having one the challenge, is the first to be finished and celebrates by screaming out, “Done,” only a few minutes after they received the instructions. Laura is very concerned that she won’t be able to memorize her lines because her severe dyslexia makes it difficult to memorize words. Nicole and Brittany stay up late into the night practicing and memorizing their lines.

The girls arrive at the commercial shoot and are greeted by Jay Emanuel and special guest, season 12 winner, Tianna who is there to guide them through the shoot. Jay goes over the girls’ scripts with them and coaches them on how to bring out their personalities for a great take, but he isn’t directing the shoot. Nigel is!

First up is Jennifer. She delivered her lines in a cute and charming way that really impressed Nigel. Sundai was a little disappointing and seemed very common in her delivery. Nicole did a miserable job memorizing her lines but did a great job exuding her personality. Brittany knew her lines the best out of all of the girls but she was very boring and robotic. Rae was bland too; she couldn’t show her personality through her script and was not very likeable.

Erin was the worst of them all. She kept messing up and got frustrated to the point of tears and couldn’t stop crying. Every couple of words she would break down again. Nigel tried to help her out and had her take a minute to walk around and cool herself down, but it didn’t help. She struggled to complete even one take.

The next day the girls meet with the judges and guest judge, Kim Khardashian is sitting on the panel. Jennifer and Nicole blow the judges away but Rae’s lack of personality and Erin’s behavior on set disappoint them. They thought Laura really brought her personality out in her script, but it took her too many takes to get through it. Sundai’s body language was very awkward and her saleswoman voice didn’t help any either. Brittany had good delivery but the personality wasn’t there. It was like she was just reading it through.

The judges deliberate and Tyra calls Jennifer first. Next are Nicole, Brittany, Sundai and Laura. Erin and Rae are in the bottom two. Tyra explains that Rae’s weakness is that she doesn’t stand out. She isn’t as strong with her presence as she is with her beauty and lacks that extra something. Erin takes some of the strongest pictures but couldn’t hold herself together on set. Erin is the one to stay. The judges feel that she has potential.
