Shark Tank

by Michelle Spigner

Shark Tank has moved to a new night and time, but the sharks are just as ferocious as ever.

On tonight’s episode, Leslie Haywood, a bubbly southern housewife, dives in first to get an investment for her business Grill Charms. Her company produces coin-sized charms that are put in meet before grilling so you can identify how each should be cooked, the different flavors and marinates, etc. Leslie asks for $50,000 for 25% stake in her company. Grill Charms are currently for sale in over 100 stores and made revenue of $60,000 last year.

If there is one thing the sharks like, is proof that a product can sell and Leslie had that. Kevin O. made the first deal and offered $50,000 for 50% stake and 7% royalties. Kevin H. offers $50,000 for 50% along with all his expertise as an infomercial king. Daymond and Robert want in on Kevin H.’s offer, but Kevin H. will only work with Daymond. Instead Robert meets Leslie’s deal at $50,000 for 25% stake.

With so many good deals on the table, Leslie steps out for a minute to speak wither her husband. She comes back in with confidence and counters Kevin H. and Daymond’s offer with 49% stake. When Kevin O. asked whey she wasn’t considering his deal, she flat out told him that she didn’t like him and didn’t want to work with him. Harsh. Kevin O. really wants the deal though, and lowers his original offer of 50% stake down to 20% and added 7% in royalties. But that still didn’t’ convince Leslie that she could work with him. She chooses to take Robert’s deal.

Todd Robbins and his partner David Adamovich are next up the shark tank with an idea that would bring old-time entertainment to the Big Apple. Todd and David are sideshow performers who entertain audiences by eating fire, swallowing swords and the like. David also know as “The Great Throwdini” demonstrates their talents and throws six knives at Robbins, who calmly stands in front of a red wall as each knife misses his body by inches and sinks into the red felt behind him. Daymond is so impressed he volunteers to stand in front of the wall as David hurls the knives into the wall around him.

It turns out it is not the knife set and red felt wall they are selling but a new attraction called the Fun House Project, a 20,000 square foot venue to be built in Times Square where the public can come and enjoy magic shows, restaurants, bars and theaters. They ask for $300,000 for 20% stake in the company. They will charge $15 for admission, but it will cost about $1.2 million dollars to set it up and whopping $7.4 million dollars in annual expenses. The sharks are outdone with such high numbers. They agree that the project is too risky, too expensive and just don’t see it being profitable in today’s market.

Dede Barbarant and Kathy Lamn are up next. Dede and Kathy are both moms who had gained extra weight while pregnant and were challenged to find a fun and easy way to get back in shape. They enter the boardroom dressed in camouflage and demonstrate the heart-pumping fitness routine they call the Boogie Box. Kevin O. isn’t sure that the program is as easy as the women made it seem and he gets up and learns the moves.

They are asking for $700,000 for 70% stake in their home DVD business. Dede and Kathy want the money to use for advertising and infomercials. At this point they only have the certified teaching classes and have made about $15,000. Daymond is out almost immediately because he doesn’t have the business savvy to get their program off the ground.  Kevin O. likes the idea but just would like to do it without risking $700,000 dollars to find out if the program will be successful or not. Kevin H. and Robert are out. Only Barbara is left. She likes their genuineness and their passion but just thinks they made a big mistake by asking for so much money, and is out.

Last up is Sawyer Sparks a college student from the small-town of Bloomfield, Indiana who hopes his invention will bring jobs to his hometown. Sawyer has created and patented the first and only gluten-free modeling clay for kids with wheat allergies. The sharks’ ears are instantly perked and it looks like it will be a fight for the deal.

Sawyer is asking for $125,000 for 25% stake in his company Soy-Yer-Dough. He explains that there is a huge market for this because 1 in 9 children have gluten allergies. He and his mother and girlfriend have been making the clay in his kitchen and now he wants to expand his business. He has even gotten several calls from Play-Dough, who want to purchase his company and the patent. The sharks are outraged he didn’t take the deal. But Sawyer who appears to be a savvy man wants to expand the business to give some people in his hometown jobs, and then sell the business when it is the most profitable.

The sharks like his thinking and Kevin O. will give him the $125,000 but for 51% of the company, offering his expertise to do all the negotiating for Sawyer. But Sawyer thinks the 51% is just too much and asks for him to come down to 40%. Kevin O. will not but Robert will take 40% for $125,000. However, its Kevin O.’s expertise that Sawyer really needs because he has negotiated these types of deals several times before. At this point Daymond, who originally said he was out, wants back in and will give Sawyer even more money. In the end Daymond, Kevin O. and Robert go in on a joint deal offering $300,000 for 51% and the expertise of 3 sharks. Sawyer takes the deal.
