Survivor: Samoa Mike Borassi and Betsy Bolan

by Gina Scarpa

Last night, on Survivor: Samoa, 62 year old Mike Borassi was taken out of the game after suffering from extremely low blood pressure following the reward/immunity challenge.  Later on, when Foa Foa headed to tribal council, Betsy Bolan was voted out of the game for going up against resident baddie Russell Hantz.  Today, the pair spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview, about the experiences on the show and how they dealt with leaving the game earlier than they both would have liked.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Mike, how long did it take for you to recover after the medical staff took you out of the game?
A. Mike: Truthfully, about an hour.   I was fine.  I was having ice cream and joking with the medical staff and was ready to go back into the game.  Right after the game, I kept telling the doctor, “Don’t take me out, I’m gonna come back.”  I was dehydrated but I was comin’ back.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: How did you deal with being taken out of the game so early?
A. Mike: It was a tough pill to swallow.  Betsy and I are both in AA and we both have the tools to deal with major disappointment and drastic things in your life.  The one thing I regretted most was all the work I did.  I put in about a year of working out, weight loss, training. I just saw all those hours before me but all that work was gone.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Betsy, did you have any idea just how big of a villain Russell was when you were in Samoa?
A. Betsy: No!  I didn’t, not until I saw it on tv.  I take that back.  I knew he was an idiot.  As far as emptying out our canteens and burning socks, no, I had no idea.  He’s a jerk and I feel bad for his wife and his family.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Do you think that his Hurricane Katrina story was taking things too far?
A. Mike: Look at Jonny Fairplay lying about his grandmother.  He outwitted us.  In the game, I think there’s no holds barred as far as that goes.  He outwitted us and he’s playing the game.
A. Betsy: When he first told me, I was like, “Oh he says he’s a fireman…” and especially the dog… he was just talking about it too easy.  It’s a shame he had to use a story like that.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: I would expect a policewoman to come out of the gates very strong in physical challenges.  How do you think you did?
A. Betsy: I’m strong, I really am strong!  I might not be fast.  I’m definitely not the fastest.  I’m a strong woman.  I get aggravated when age is involved.  Just because I’m old doesn’t mean I’m weak.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Speaking of age, how do you adapt when you’re surrounded by mostly 20-somethings.  Usually, the older players are the first to go.
A. Betsy:  I just worked around the camp, tried to build a hut, and constantly work.  I did great at challenges.  We both fought hard.  It’s very frustrating because you can’t prove yourself enough.  I felt I was stronger than Liz and Ashley.
A. Mike: You were.  I almost didn’t wanna say how old I was.  I think, the first day, Marisa asked how old I was.  I told her I was 62 and she said, “Get out!  You’re a good looking guy for 62!”  Then I was like, “What am I doing here?”  If it had been 16 people over 45 and just 2 of 3 20 year olds, we would’ve voted them out.  It’s just the generation thing.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Had you stayed in the game, who would you have aligned yourself with to get further in the game?
A. Mike: Me and Betsy hit it off right off the bat.  We had the AA thing going so we had an affinity towards each other.  I tried to align in the beginning with Mick and Marisa, too.  I think that would’ve been a good group.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When Ben told Probst during tribal council that he didn’t realize he needed to play by his “sissy rules” in the challenges, my mouth hit the floor.  What was your taken on Ben’s comment?
A. Besty: Ben does not think before he speaks.  He is a good kid.  He just opens his mouth and if he doesn’t like someone, he totally disrespects them.
A. Mike: I agree.  I like him a lot but he likes the taste of foot.  I kept saying to him, “Will you just shut up?”  He’s one of those shock kind of people.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Despite leaving so early, are you still satisfied with the experience of being on Survivor?
A. Betsy: Who wouldn’t?  I still think about it morning, noon and night.  It’s a huge part of who I am.  It’s something you’ll never forget.
