America's Next Top Model Cycle 13 Lulu

by Gina Scarpa

This week, on America’s Next Top Model, Tyra asked the models to take their bodies and try to make them look as elongated and tall as possible.  Since this cycle has given the opportunity to models 5’7 and under, the girls will be facing a real challenge when they attempt to break into the fashion world.  They were given helpful tools, such as high platform shoes, ladders, hoops, and swings but the judges felt that Lulu didn’t do enough in her shoot and she was sent home.  Today, she spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about her experiences on the show.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Have you been a fan of Top Model for a long time?  What made you want to try out this season?
A. Lulu: I've been a fan of the show since cycle 1.  I've watched it religiously, every cycle.  Every Wednesday, I would be in the house, eating popcorn in front of the tv.  I tried out because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.  I didn't even think I was going to make it in the door but here I am.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What was your reaction when you found out that you had made it into the house and onto the show?
A. Lulu: I was actually in my house, with my mother, doing boring stuff.  Someone called me and left a message.  I didn't get the call.  It said, “This is regarding an application.”  I was thinking, "Okay, I tried out for a lot of jobs," because I needed money.  I found out I made it into the house and I was like, "No, you can't be serious!"

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Were you nervous to leave your family or were you ready to go when Top Model called?
A. Lulu: As soon as I got that call, I was packed an hour later.  I was like, "I am outta here!"  I was sad to leave behind some people but I knew that this was an experience that I couldn't second guess.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Top Model is always going to have its share of drama.  How difficult was it to stay out of it?
A. Lulu: It really wasn't that hard because I’m very social.  Even when I don't like someone, I can’t not speak to them.  I have to speak to people.  It was hard with the clashing of the personalities, dealing with 14 different people from 14 different places but actually, I thought we were the quietest of all the cycles.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Do you have a favorite photo?
A. Lulu: It might sound a little conceited but I like all my photos.  The second photo shoot, I didn't like (the one with the horse).  I liked that I looked relaxed and that I was naked and still looked comfortable.  But it didn't look model-y.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
This cycle is all about shorter models so how did you feel when your photo shoot this week was all about trying to make yourselves look taller?
A. Lulu: I thought it was a great idea!  The props on set helped with the vision that Tyra had for that photo shoot.  We are short girls, what's the point of trying to make us look taller?  I didn't really get that but you can't just be 5'7 in this business.  You’ve got to look tall.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: It didn’t seem that you had the worst photo this week so were you surprised when Tyra told you that you were going home?
A. Lulu: I was very confused.  I didn't think I was going to be in the bottom and I did not think I was going to go home.  I was shocked, I was upset.  I don't even know how to explain it.  I was very thankful for the opportunity but at the same time, I didn't want to move from that room.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Nigel said that you were his favorite girl to look at and yet, you were eliminated.  Does it frustrate you that you didn’t go home necessarily because of a bad photo?
A. Lulu: Definitely!  That's one of the things that really stayed on my mind, even after everything happened.  I was just thinking, "I would rather have gone home for the worst picture in the bunch than gone home for some reason that I don't even know."

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Did the show keep your love for modeling and what do you see in your future?
A. Lulu: It gave me a little bit more love for modeling.  So many doors are going to be opened and I'm just excited to see what comes next.
