Project Runway Season 6 Johnny Sakalis

by Gina Scarpa

Last week, on Project Runway, the designers were asked to construct an outfit completely out of newspaper.  This proved to be challenging for many of them, who had no experience using paper as their main material.  Johnny started off with a design that Tim Gunn heavily criticized so he threw it away and started from scratch, with hardly any time before the runway show.  Several designers, and even Tim Gunn, questioned his integrity when he told the panel, after landing in the bottom group, that an iron spilled water on his outfit.    He was eliminated from the competition and today, spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview, filling us in on the real story.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What made you want to try out for Project Runway and how did you end up auditioning?
A. Johnny: It was just something that definitely sounded like fun so I made a goal to get on and, after the third try, I did.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: In the first episode, the pressure of being on the show got to you. What made you decide to stay and keep competing?
A. Johnny: Tim Gunn's encouraging words and the realization that I could do it.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Which design are you most proud of this season?
A. Johnny: Definitely the red carpet challenge dress.  I went from being totally blocked to creating that draped piece of pretty and it's all done out of one piece of draped silk charmeuse... no seams just the zipper. I will never tell the secret behind it!

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What happened with the first paper design from last night's episode?
A. Johnny: Well, after Tim's critique and a second, third, and fourth look, I started to notice that the water and paint mixture I was using was causing the paper to crumpl and, in certain, spots tear.  So I had to either start anew or show a ripped and crumpled dress.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Some of the designers were not very kind to you during their interviews. How did that make you feel?
A. Johnny: In all honesty, I couldn't care less. Putting all that energy into disliking me is a total waste of energy on their parts. I have never been one to give a damn about what other people think about me.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Everyone said you were lying about the steamer/iron getting water on your first design, even Tim Gunn.  What is your response to that?
A. Johnny: The steamer/iron sputtered on the second dress not the first. The water damage on the first dress was done with the mixture of water and paint I was using, and it weakened the integrity of the paper. I was more upset that my passion for what I do was taken into question.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You obviously were not happy with your design on the runway last night but do you think you should've been given another chance?
A. Johnny: I think the inconsistency in judging has definitely played a part in a lot of the judgment on the show. At least with a constant panel, they would know what you were/are capable of from week to week instead of this being just challenged based. I mean, every designer has a bad review or collection.  It's what keeps up striving and moving forward.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What did you get out of being on Project Runway that you will take with you as you continue as a designer?
A. Johnny: That I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. I have decided that Project Runway, as wonderful as it is, will be something I did, not something that will ever define me as a designer.
