America's Next Top Model Cycle 13

by Michelle Spigner

It was all about “smizing” (aka smiling with your eyes) on tonight’s episode of America’s Next Top Model.

First, the girls meet one-on-one with Nigel Barker and the President of Wilhelmina Models, Sean Patterson. Each of the girls has a chance to talk with and walk for Nigel and Sean. However, what they didn’t know is that instead of choosing a winner, Nigel and Sean are going to send the weakest model home.

In this case it was Rachel, the doe-eyed brunette who in her meeting with Sean said she did musical theater, but when asked to sing couldn’t think of a single song. They just didn’t see the charisma they were looking for. Sorry girl.

The next day the models arrived at a studio for their next challenge. A pint-sized photographer commands that each of the girls strike a pose and yells at them when he doesn’t get a perfect shot. Then, a shy stammering Tyra enters the room wearing a trench coat and glasses claiming that she would be the one who could take the perfect shot. The photographer loves her and complains that the “munchkin” girls just couldn’t get it right.

At that, Tyra gets very very angry, and the moment becomes Hulk-like as Tyra throws off her classes and rips away her coat. She breaks out in a superhero outfit complete with boots, unitard, and a cape with the words “smize” on the back. Apparently, this was the lesson for the day. Thumping music began to play and Tyra poses to perfection, and as she hits ever pose the camera goes into close-ups of her squinted eyes. It appears Tyra will be making a cameo every show.

Tyra, excuse me “Super Smize” gives each of the girls a short tutorial of how they should use their face muscles to smize. It is competition time and the girls dress up in fuchsia jumpsuits and ninja masks that cover everything but their eyes.  They battle it out two by two to see how much intensity (there was an intensity scale and all) they can generate with their eyes. And with Super Smize gone to teach other girls how to squint, Tyra judged the competition.

The winners are given beautiful designer clothes to wear and have dinner at Tyra’s favorite restaurant with Sean Patterson. The losers are given white shirts, aprons and rubber gloves and washed dishes in the kitchen? (I’m not sure when the punishments started to be modeled after Hell’s Kitchen)

The next day, the girls arrive at a horse track for their photo shoot. Jay Alexander explains that the famous horse, Seabiscuit, who was shorter than all the other horses, should inspire the girl but was still a champion. The girls will pose with a horse and a jockey and in the nude! But not so much. The shoot is topless and they are all adorned in waist-long wigs that cover their chests.

The outstanding girls from the first shot remain strong including Nicole, Brittany and Rae. Bianca, who was in the bottom two last week because of her attitude about her makeup wardrobe, had just as much attitude this week. She is given a blonde wig to match the horse’s hair showed through. Jennifer has trouble with her smize because of the condition in her left eye that has made the muscle weak and her eyes to look uneven.

The next day the girls meet with the judges and special guest Lauren Conrad joins the panel. This week, the judges loved Erin, who was called first. Her intense and sexy stare wowed the judges. Next was Brittany who had a stunning pose on the horse in which she was resting completely sideways. The rest of the girls were called in this order, Laura, Nicole, Kara, Jennifer, Sundai, Rae, Lulu and Ashley.

Bianca and Courtney were in the bottom two. The judges could tell that Bianca had an attitude and just couldn’t break through her hair and make-up to bring out a wonderful picture. Courtney is suffering from a broken leg, and has to wear a boot. The judges feel for her pain, but they could tell that she was frustrated about it in her shot.

In the end, the judges decided that it was Courtney who had to go.
