I have to admit, I was surprised by the
outcome of Big Brother 11. Pleasantly surprised, don’t get me wrong, but
shocked nonetheless. Coming into the game, who would have thought that Jordan,
the girl who had never seen Big Brother, who didn’t even have internet before
she applied for the show, who was even deemed by CBS as “naïve” would walk away
with the $500,000?
Initially, I was rooting for Laura,
because I thought she would rip through the house. When Jordan aligned with
her, I thought she’d probably make the jury, but she’d be one of those
sacrifice 7th or 8th place evictions. And then as the
game progressed and Braden and Laura were the first two evicted, I still
expected Jordan to make the jury, but get evicted after she’d been dragged
along by the stronger players.
Something must have clicked in her head
around the time that Casey left, though, because she wisened up, stopped being
so lazy in the house and really started playing the game. Most of the time on
the feeds, she was listening to what everyone had to say and she was truly
collaborating with Jeff—not being his puppet like everyone says she was.
Granted, she didn’t win that much, and
what she did win was more or less handed to her by Jeff (with the exception of
the final HoH), but she still played a solid game. She didn’t have any
individual responsibility for any big moves made, but she was still a key
player in many of the decisions from the start of the jury leading up to Jeff’s
eviction.
After Jeff’s eviction, though, I thought
it was over for her. She seemed really upset that he was gone and it was almost
as if she had accepted the fact that Jeff had been her crutch and now she was
completely hopeless. But maybe that played into her strategy, because Kevin and
Natalie targeted Michele over her, which allowed her to slip into the final
three and take the whole game home.
Was she a perfect winner? No, of course
not, she could have been so much more active, and there were points in the
season when she was borderline annoying because of how dependent on Jeff she
was. But compare her to Natalie or Kevin and she totally deserved to win the
finale. Kevin had zero strategy whatsoever and I honestly forgot about him
during the middle stretch of the game. It was hard for me to like his gameplay
because I liked him so much as a person that I wanted him to play a lot harder
than he was and stop being so scared of everyone hating him.
Natalie, on the other hand, just straight
up blew her shot in the finals. Had Natalie not been so cocky and given a lot
more credit to the people on the jury (i.e. Jessie and Lydia), she could have
won the game. But instead, she was proud of all the lies that she told. Since
when does being proud of blatant deception win anyone over, especially against
one of the most innocent people ever on national television? I guess Natalie
never thought about that one.
I really do give props to Jordan for
winning this season, because I think of all the winners, she ranks up there as
one of the biggest underdogs at the beginning of the season. I think the best
part about it all that you know she’s going to improve her life with the money
and she’s not going to let the temporary stardom go to her head. Though the end
was slightly dull, I think this season earned Big Brother’s highest ratings for
a reason, and I’m totally happy that Jordan came out on top.
