Americas Got Talent

by  Arthur Perkins

It was another difficult night for the public, as there were a wealth of good performances to choose from. Nick Cannon revealed that there will be only 4 moving on from this group, with the last slot decided by the judges in a runoff between #4 and #5. Who will they be? The producers of AGT4 have shown an uncanny knack for putting the best acts first. My hypothesis is that they leave the decision on performance order until after all rehearsals have been completed so that they know who is likely to be best.

Tonight the first two performances are by AcroDunk and the Texas Tenors and they were the best of the evening. Both teams will be going through unless the American public pulls another fast one on me. AcroDunk gave a dazzling high energy performance quite different than anything they had done previously Piers called them absolutely unbelievable, exciting, dynamic and dangerous. Sharon lauded their perfect timing and the fact that "every time we see you up there it's different." David is restrained with "dreams do come true." AcroDunk Y (for Yes)

Texas Tenors opened with Marcus (the blond one) with an unaccompanied solo but finished with the bearded one singing strong melody on the bottom part with the other two harmonizing on top of him. It worked extremely well. They were much more polished than in previous performances.   Texas Tenors Y

Paradizo Dance was third and they were disappointing relative to previous performances. They elected to do an entirely different routine on a "Just Married" theme. It was good but not great. Sharon said very cute, light-hearted. Dave said "go back to your old stuff." Piers said it was difficult to follow the first 2 acts, particularly with them not doing the "Zooey lifts Dave" bits. He was disappointed. I think this team, one of my favorites, is gone but I am placing them on the Bubble.  B

Drew Thomas Magic performed 4th and he had a totally new routine centered on the 3 assistants vanishing and a girl (his daughter) appearing in their place with 3 dolls of the others. It was good, but again that will not be good enough. Piers says that he hated this, the pace was too slow and the trick was the same one as before. Then his punch line that the only thing disappearing is going to be your act from AGT4. David said "I like it very much."  I put them on the Bubble. B

Tony Hoard and Rory performed very well last night, but not great. Rory, with I'm sure constant practice and Tony the same, improved back to the level of the preliminary rounds. However, the question you now have to ask is "what do they do for an encore?" It's difficult to revise an act to make it fresh when you have to train a dog. It hasn't been done in their 3 performances and isn't likely to happen in the finals if they make it. I have them on the Bubble because they were decent last night, but I doubt that they will make the top 4.  B

Voices of Glory were very good last night. it is clear to me as a singer (but Piers has obviously missed this) that the truly talented singer in this trio is the older brother, Michael. Piers has stated twice that the young girl is the best singer, but he doesn't have a good enough ear to make a discerning judgment. She is cute, but so what; that does not make her "the star" which Piers is angling for on her behalf. The strength of this trio is in fact the harmony singing that they do where all have equal contributions. So (and I rarely think or say this), sit down and shut up, Piers. I thought that this was the best act after the first 2 and I am predicting a spot in the finals base on that.   Y

Fab 5 was next. I am frankly sick of them. I guess it's difficult to do a reasonably fresh dance routine with only 2 weeks to rehearse it, so they did not even try. They tap-danced in very good synchronization but it was the same old same old. Sharon said fantastic, David said good job. Piers said it's not working.  He was closest in assessment to what I believe.    N

Grandma Lee came up with an entirely new set of jokes, which is much easier for her to do than for an act based on synchronization like AcroDunk or Fab 5 to do. They were very funny. She also finished by pulling off her slacks and revealing shorts colored in the red/white/blue pattern of the United Kingdom flag to honor  Piers. Piers said both new material and her delivery were great. Sharon said "naughty, dirty, irreverent", you make your own jokes, you've got it. David acknowledged that she stepped up and was funny.  I think she has a very good probability of being in that runoff.  B

Arcadian Broad got into an on-camera argument on who chose his High School Musical routine, the producers or him. Nick cautioned him that the performer always has the final say. This dialogue happened because Arcadian's mostly new routine was a loser. It showcased him doing the same twirls as before but added a young girl for maybe 20 seconds of partner dancing. Piers stated the obvious by asking "Are you good enough to make the final?" and answering that with "No, you're not." Arcadian ticket home has been punched. He has no chance against this competition of making it to the final.   N

Kevin Skinner sang "You're Always On My Mind" and many notes were flat. He has finally topped out and it should be obvious to America that he isn't worthy of the finals. However, stranger things have happened already in AGT4. Piers, who I normally agree with most of the time, said "you're my favorite to win ." This is the second case along with Voices of Glory where I think Piers needs his ears cleaned out. Sharon said "you nailed the song; you've got his downer style like Johnny Cash."  The esteemed judges are wrong on their assessment of this one. I think Kevin Skinner, with the home audience always a sucker for a hard-luck story, will not be close to staying in this competition.    N

OK, so I have 3 Ys: AcroDunk, Texas Tenors, Voices of Glory . I rate 3 teams (Arcadian Broad, Fab 5 and Kevin Skinner) as not good enough. 4 teams are left on my bubble: Paradizo Dance, Drew Thomas Magic, Tony Hoard and Rory, Grandma Lee.
I think this battle for #4 is between Paradizo Dance and Grandma Lee. I would like to see Paradizo Dance win it, but last night Grandma Lee performed a bit better than they did.  I am going with Grandma Lee for #4.

It won't be long until we know, less than 12 hours.
