Shark Tank

by Michelle Spigner

In tonight’s episode of Shark Tank, Kwame Kuadey enters the tank first to pitch his idea to buy and sell unused gift cards. Kwame has a desire to fulfill his American dream and asks for $150,000 for 30% stake in his company, Gift Card Rescue. Gift Card Rescue buys unused gift cards from consumers and resells the cards at a lower value. Kevin O. offers the $150,000 but wants an equal share in the company. Kwame is unwilling to give up the majority share in his company and comes back with a counter offer of 40% for $150,000. Robert is confident Kwame is “the real deal” and offers to go in with Kevin O. offering $200,000 for 50%. Kwame takes it, thankful he can obtain his dream.

Gina Cotroneo hoped the sharks could help her on her mission to spread happiness with her line of gifts and accessories. She asks for $150,000 for a 25% stake in her company Soul’s Calling Inc. that includes bright pink umbrella’s with “let your smile be sunshine” inscribed on the side and flip-flops that imprint positive words in sand. The sharks like her idea but do not think it could make any really money. They go out one by one and Gina leaves the shark tank without a deal.

Next up is Dan Claffey, with a new idea that merges a love of coffee and plush toys. Dan asks for $300,000 for a 40% stake in his company, Coffee Brand Gifts that trademarked terms like latté, espresso and java for teddy bears and board games. He has put almost $500,000 in the company but has not made a single sale. The sharks are outdone with his lack of evidence that the products could sell. Dan says his research that proved his products could sell and that is where he invested his time and money. “You have completely wasted my time, I’m out,” Robert replies. And with that Dan has no deals.

Finally, Amy Feldman and Allison Cofta enter the tank with a product that all the sharks start fighting for. Their product, CoverPlay is a slip cover for child play yards that protects it from all types of baby accidents and stains. CoverPlay debuted in Target stores and is being sold in several hospitality services including Marriot and Hilton hotels and has 2 U.S. patents behind it. In a nutshell it is a dream investment for the sharks and the teeth came out. Amy and Allison ask for a $350,000 investment for 15%stake. Barbara and Daymond both make generous offers, but once they find stake in the patent is not included in the deal they take their offers off the table.

Amy and Allison have a tough decision to make but are willing to include the patent in the deal and they are presented with two great deals. They can go with Robert, Daymond and Kevin O. and take their $350,000 for a 51% stake and a range of expertise or they can go in with Barbara who offers $350,000 for 40% in the company. Amy and Allison decide to go with Barbara and anticipate much success.

Shark Tank airs Sunday nights at 9pm ET on ABC.
