Project Runway Season 6

by Gina Scarpa

On tonight’s episode of Project Runway, reality has set in for the designers following Ari’s elimination.  None of them are safe and one bad outfit could be your plane ticket home.  Heidi meets up with everyone to fill them in on their next challenge.  Now that they’ve all created a red carpet look, it’s time to design something for an actual celebrity.  She’s a supermodel and a film and television star.  It’s… Rebecca Romijn!  Love her!  She has a surprise for the designers – she’s pregnant and that means they’ll be designing for two.  Er, three.  It’s twins.

The cool thing about the challenge is that they can make an outfit for any occasion, whether it’s for a luncheon or a night out with friends.  The only requirement is that the outfit is pregnancy chic.   Lemme tell ya… as a mother, I can relate to this challenge.  It’s pretty tough to find flattering clothes, especially when you’re in that final stretch.

After a shopping spree at Mood, the designers get to work.  Althea plans to use ribbons to create a bodice, but wants her outfit to be comfortable.  Louis goes with a 1920s inspired negligee cocktail dress – which is very her.  The guys seem to be pretty freaked out by this challenge.  Their nerves are apparent and some of them even admit to being throw off by this challenge.  Malvin, however, seems focused and came up with this cool design.  He draped the top of his outfit so that the belly sort of looks like an egg.  I like it.

Tim starts making the rounds and makes his first stop at Althea’s work station.  He doesn’t seem too impressed with what she’s doing.  Next stop: Louise.  He likes the dye job that she did on the material but shares her concern that the dress looks too much like pajamas.  Shirin plans to pair her outfit with a jacket, which Tim likes.  I thought he would be a bigger fan of what Malvin is doing but, well, he’s not.  He’s concerned that the outfit is going to make a woman’s hips look bigger and who wants that?  Fair enough.  I know I don’t!

In the final fitting, some of the designers run into a few problems.  Mitchell’s shorts look sloppy on his model while Althea’s model is having a hard time fitting her chest into the top of the dress.  They’ll have to make those last minute adjustments quickly because it’s time for hair and makeup and then on to the runway show.

Filling in for Michael Kors tonight is Monique Lhullier, a famous fashion designer.   The rest of the panel is on hand and, of course, Rebecca Romijn is sititng in, as well.   I like what Logan, Shirin, Christopher, Qristyl, Louise, Gordana, Carol, and Irina have done.  I’m especially a fan of Christopher, who won last week’s challenge.  I LOVE this design tonight and if he won again tonight, I wouldn’t be surprised.  I wasn’t too impressed with Nicolas, Mitchell, Epperson, Johnny, Ra’mon, Althea, and unfortunately, Malvin.  The concept sounded great but just didn’t translate onto the runway for me.

Louise, Althea, Mitchell, Malvin, Ra’mon, and Shirin are all asked to stay, while the rest are deemed safe for the week.   The panel doesn’t like that Ra’mon’s cocktail dress almost looks like it has an arrow drawing too much attention to the belly.  Louise’s design goes over well and Rebecca says she would wear that out on a date with her husband.  Monique loves the color that Althea chose, as well as the tailoring and the detail.  Nina and Heidi don’t like the chicken and egg look that Malvin went for.  The panel doesn’t feel that Mitchell’s outfit was constructed well but appreciates the look that he was going for.  Shirin’s jacket is a hit with the panel and her dress and super comfy and super cute!

After deliberating, the designers are given the results.  Louise is in.  Rebecca announces the winner: Shirin.  Yay!  That was such a cute outfit and I’m glad that the panel and I were on the same page with this one.  Althea is in, as is Ra’mon, which leaves Malvin and Mitchell in the bottom two.  Malvin is sent home, because the panel felt that his outfit was too out there for their taste.  These designers are going to need to learn when to pull back.  With Ari and Malvin being the first to go, it's clear that the judges are having a hard time seeing concepts that are not exactly the norm.
