America's Got Talent

by  Arthur Perkins

Tonight we saw the announcements about which 5 teams from last night's performance show made the semifinal round and which 7 did not. Nick says that last night somebody set his butt on fire. Lingerie was tossed all over the stage. Piers states that the dog is lucky to still be around.  Sharon expected surprises tonight. That trickster Nick Cannon (with a lot of help from the producers who actually set it up this way) had several surprises, some intended by the producers and others the result of an audience vote that I think shafted one really fine act.

The first pairing was the Eriam Sisters and Drew Stevyns. Nick announced that Drew was going through and minutes later that the Eriam Sisters are too. That means at least one of my projected top 5 is gone. Who will it be? Piers accused Nick of being mean, much more so than Piers ever is with his buzzer.

The second pairing was African High Flyers, Pam Martin's Top Dogs and Coney Island Chris. I had projected none of them in the top 6, so I was not surprised that all of them are going home. Coney Island Chris retaliated by squirting water form his glasses all over that part of the stage.

The shocker was in the third pairing of Ishaara and Recycled Percussion. Ishaara is a superior dance troupe while Recycled Percussion are only good percussionists. Recycled Percussion won the coveted next spot. That means America voted Ishaara no higher than 7th. That is a ripoff.

The featured performer tonight is Reba McIntyre. It was going on now while I wrote some of this.

The producers really want to keep us off balance. The fourth pairing was the foursome of Barbara Padilla, Lollipop Girls, Erik and Rickey and Mia Boostrom. Barbara Padilla was the closest thing to a lock but the first out from this group is Lollipop Girls, which I think is a fair assessment. Barbara is then assured of her place in semifinals. That leaves Erik and Rickey and Mia Boostrom to be judged #5 vs. #6 by the judges.

The judges voted as follows:
David - Erik/Rickey
Sharon - Mia
Piers - sends Eric/Rickey to the semifinals

So that gives us the following 20 acts to consider for future weeks:

QF1 8/5
Grandma Lee
Acrodunk
Drew Thomas Magic
Kevin Skinner
Arcadian Broad

QF2 8/12
FabFive
Paradizo Dance
Texas Tenors
Voices of Glory
Tony Hoard and Rory

QF3 8/19
Footworkingz
Hairo Torres
Jeffrey Ou
Mario and Jenny
Lawrence Beamen

QF4 8/26
Barbara Padilla
Eriam Sisters
Drew Stevyns
Recycled Percussion
Erik and Rickey

My method is that of elimination. Identify the 10 weakest teams and you will have the top 10 by subtraction. Those 10 weakest in my opinion are:
Grandma Lee
Arcadian Broad
Tony Hoard and Rory
Texas Tenors
Jeffrey Ou
Hairo Torres
Drew Stevyns
Erik and Rickey

That's 8 and now it gets difficult. I think that the magic of Drew Thomas will not look as impressive against this competition and predict he will be eliminated in the Semifinal round. Then I think the Eriam Sisters will bite the dust there too. So, who does that leave for the top 10? They are:

Acrodunk
Kevin Skinner
Voices of Glory
Paradizo Dance
FabFive
Lawrence Beamen
Mario and Jenny
Footworkingz
Barbara Padilla
Recycled Percussion

Although I have predictions of the top 5 too, I will save them for a future recap.

The announced  performers for next Tuesday night will be the 10 acts listed above under QF1 8/5 and QF2 8/12. Be there.
