Big Brother 11

By David McAlpine

When we last saw Big Brother 11, Jeff was letting his power as Head of Household get a little too far to his head. After pinning the house down under his fingers, Jeff chose to honor his final four alliance and nominate Kevin and Natalie for eviction.

Since tension is so high in the house and Jeff knows that he’s finally accountable for what happens this week, he’s slightly irritable. So who’s he going to take his frustration out on? Russell? Natalie? You’d think so, but no, instead it’s on sweet little Jordan, who Jeff seems to think isn’t pulling her weight. I want to feel really sorry for Jordan, but she should be upset that he’s acting this way, not blaming it on herself. Really, Jordan? At least she acknowledges that the Jeff we’re seeing isn’t the Jeff that we all know and love…but still, the girl has to stand up for herself.

Enter the twist in the plot of the episode: the possibility that Russell will get backdoored this week. The scene is set: three pairs of two, but it’s one pair against the other with the third floating in the middle. So, Jeff, running through all the possibilities, has started to think that maybe getting rid of the floaters is the best idea? I think it’s a lot riskier because he’s going to piss a lot more people off this way, but he could get credit at the end. At the same time, Jeff is playing with fire, because he could easily have the rest of the house against him and Jordan for lying to everyone about the final four.

For once in the season, it’s genuinely up in the air as to what Jeff wants to do, and it’s clear he’s getting more and more frustrated because his demeanor is constantly changing (for the worse). Again, I feel bad for the guy, but at the same time, he’s being too hard on himself and not playing the game. Getting this involved in what is happening is too much, and it’s not the smart thing to do. It’s then pointed out that Natalie hasn’t won anything, despite the tremendous say she had at the beginning of the game (can anyone say jury threat?), while Russell has won more. What to do, what to do?

Nothing can be decided until the Power of Veto competition, which is hosted this week by the mysterious Veto god Otev, voiced this season by Casey. The giant idol then proceeds to rap (yes, you heard right, rap) a clue about a former houseguest, then the houseguests must rush to find a banana in the backyard with said houseguest’s name on it. Each round, one contestant will be eliminated until only one is remaining. Jordan is out first, followed by Michele, then Russell. Kevin is narrowly eliminated, leaving the veto to be won by Michele or Jeff. Jeff, who had been consistently one of the first people back, defeated Michele, giving him the Power of Veto for the week as well.

There’s more of the “what to do?” footage, and everyone is trying to assure Jeff that he’s safe next week if he keeps them safe. The sad part about it is that Michele and Russell are telling the truth and Kevin and Natalie aren’t—and yet Jeff believes Kevin and Natalie over Michele and Russell.

Like many things in Big Brother, the inevitable happened: Jeff made a fatal mistake by using the PoV on Kevin and nominating Russell in his place. Not only is it clearly going to be Michele, Kevin and Natalie against Jeff and Jordan, but Jeff can’t compete in HoH this week. Not only did Jeff seemingly screw himself over for the rest of the game, but he’s also coming out looking like the bad guy. Couldn’t just once America’s favorite carry it to the end? Is that too much to ask?

Tune in to Big Brother 11 on Thursday at 8/7c on CBS to see who is evicted between Russell and Natalie and who wins next’s week crucial Head of Household competition!
