America's Best Dance Crew Season 4

by Danae Young

This week, on the season premiere of America’s Best Dance Crew, nine crews take the stage. The pressure is on for the west coast since they have won the last three seasons.

Mario Lopez kicks off the show by introducing all of the crews: Beat Ya Feet Kings from Washington D.C., We Are Heroes from Los Angeles, CA, Afroborike from Las Vegas, NV, Massive Monkees from Seattle, WA, Artistry in Motion from North Hollywood, CA, Southern Movement from Nashville, TN, Rhythm City from The Bronx, NY, Fr3sh from New Jersey, and Vogue Nation from New York City, NY.

Each of the crews then got a chance to show the judges what they got by doing a performance. Shane Sparks said Beat Ya Feet Kings had a somewhat sloppy performance. Both Lil Mama and JC Chasez agreed. We Are Heroes, an all-female group, were up next. Shane said he liked the new style they were showing them. Lil Mama said it started off slow but they are definitely talented. JC enjoyed their poppin’. The last crew to perform in the first part of the night was Afroborike, a crew made up of both Cuban and Puerto Rican influence. JC said their energy was awesome. Shane liked their combination of different types of dancing. Lil Mama enjoyed the balance of the performance.

Only two of the three crews can be selected to continue on. The remaining crew must battle it out in the sudden death round. Unfortunately for Beat Ya Feet Kings, they were chosen to compete in sudden death for a chance to come back next week.

The next three crews got their chance to show the judges what they are made of. Massive Monkees performed first. Shane said they came out with fire from beginning to end. Lil Mama thought they were on point and very athletic. JC thought it was a great performance all around. Artistry in Motion is the other all-female group in the competition trying to break the stereotypes of dance. Shane said their routine was flawless. Lil Mama added that they were both incredible and inspirational. JC agreed with Shane but said they started to fall apart at the end. Southern Movement showed the judges their “hick hop” style. Shane was surprised that they really could dance. Lil Mama loved the energy. JC found the performance very entertaining. Southern Movement joined the Beat Ya Feet Kings in sudden death.

The last group of crews was up next. Rhythm City performed first. Shane thought they killed it from the look all the way to the choreography. Lil Mama loved their style and thinks they are great. JC said they were easily his favorite so far. Fr3sh is here to stand out and make a name for themselves. Shane liked their energy and how they used their bodies. Lil Mama loved the choice of music and thinks they are incredible. JC said it was a good routine but needed some work. The last crew of the night was Vogue Evolution, a group of gay men which is a first on the show. Shane likes their style and commitment. Lil Mama said they brought a new element to the show. JC really liked the choreography. The final group joining sudden death was Fr3sh.

During sudden death, each crew gets 30 seconds to show the judges what they’ve got. Each group does their thing and the judges deliberated. They finally come to a decision to send Fr3sh home. Like every crew that gets eliminated, their banner must fall.
